Isue mengenai pemanasan bumi yang diakibatkan oleh produksi gas karbon dioksida sebagai akibat pe... more Isue mengenai pemanasan bumi yang diakibatkan oleh produksi gas karbon dioksida sebagai akibat pembakaran bahan bakar minyak (minyak bumi, batu bara, gas alam) memaksa ilmuwan, pakar energi, akhli lingkungan, serta pihak-pihak lain yang terkait untuk ikut memikirkan penggunaan energi alternatif yang aman. Tenaga nuklir yang tidak menghasilkan gas buang semacam karbon dioksida, ternyata bukan merupakan solusi energi alternatif yang baik karena meninggalkan sampah radioaktif yang belum ada solusi pembuangan yang diangap aman untuk masa yang akan datang. Tenaga surya, yang umumnya sudah digunakan secara tradisional sejak ratusan abad yang silam, perlu mendapat perhatian. Pemanfaatan tenaga surya baik secara pasif maupun aktif bagi bangunan perlu mendapat perhatian dari para arsitek. Pemanfaatan tenaga surya secara aktif, dimana tenaga surya dikonversikan terlebih dahulu menjadi tenaga listrik dengan solar sel, seyogyanya tidak berdiri sendiri, perlu diintegrasikan dengan aplikasi perancangan secara pasif. Perancangan secara aktif bertujuan untuk mengurangi beban listrik yang berasal dari minyak bumi -secara langsung mengurangi jumlah gas karbon dioksida yang dibuang ke udara, sedangkan perancangan pasif bertujuan untuk mengurangi beban penggunaan energi listrik -yang berasal dari sumber listrik apapun -di dalam bangunan. Makalah ini membahas isue yang diutarakan diatas, dimana pada akhirnya memberikan contoh dari suatu karya arsitektur yang dianggap berhasil dalam mengaplikasikan strategi perancangan secara aktif (menggunakan solar sel) serta tidak meninggalkan sterategi perancangan secara pasif.

Most of these countries were used to be the colony of some of the developed nations. Shortly after gaining the independence in 1950's and 60's, most of these countries remained poor, still undeveloped, indicating by their low gross domestic product (GDP) and human development index (HDI). Every country in the world has the right to develop and improve its nation's well-being, providing better housing, buildings and other built environment. Improving wellbeing and developing the built environment, a country requires more energy and other earth's resources. Since most of the energy in the developing countries like Indonesia is mainly generated from fossil fuel, the emission of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) was inevitably increased. In most of the cases improving the built environment would raise the carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions. The question is how to improve the quality of the built environment in the humid tropical country like Indonesia without escalating CO 2 emissions. This paper discusses this issue and tries to find ways to answer the question.

Using a car is faster than taking a walk or riding a bicycle and tends to be more convenient. People started to change the transport mode from riding a horse to use the train when this modern technology was invented; people change their behaviours to be more dependent on new technology. However, since the new technology is mainly operated by fossil fuel, the more technology we use the more carbon dioxide is to be released to the atmosphere, creating global warming. In the past, people tend to use traditional technology, which is mainly operated by the human and animal muscles, emitting lower carbon dioxide for operating than the new one. This paper discusses the impact of the utilisation of modern technology in architecture in relation to global warming.

Modern and rich people living in big towns are more likely to use every available modern technology to support their higher living standards, consuming much more energy than the poor living in shanty houses, or vernacular people living in vernacular settlements using simple tools and applying modest traditional technology. This paper discusses the relation between human behaviour, the use of technology and the emission of carbon dioxide in a tropical climate of Indonesia.
