It explores how a transnational education identity in secondary and tertiary institutions has developed in the German and other national contexts and which lessons can be learned from current challenges and successes of education systems. It uses detailed case studies to promote critical rethinking of current educational practices in high schools and universities, specifically of race, gender, religion and learner ability in educational settings. It understands learning and teaching as an arena to discuss transnational education opportunities in the 21st century as an emerging or evolving discourse on contemporary forms of transnationalism. It is a model that is stifling intellectual life, student engagement and-most importantly-the advancement and production of new knowledge. The gig university cannot be responsive to public demands, addressing social and political challenges fortuitously, mostly at the rhetorical level, in mission statements or as a part of 'university goals', which usually are not comprehensively assessed. Gig academia narrowed down the function of higher education to budgets and profits, making most universities in the Western Anglo-speaking countries a corporate entity with a maze of contradictory goals, unclear identity, an atrophied sense of public responsibilities and a structural incapacity to address the most important problems confronting us all. This study aims to stimulate new research and scholarship to create alternative models for Academia, based on the courage of thinking and the possibility of heresies, genuine creativity, and exploratory practices and ideas in teaching and academic life.

This chapter is an analysis of the main promises and expectations associated with MOOCs in higher education. This analysis is largely informed by a literature review of new extensive research reports, press releases, media articles, scholarly blogs and academic papers. Considering costs and benefits, ethical aspects and the impact on the landscape of higher education, the author explores whether MOOCs stay consistent with their initial promises and rhetoric. This chapter continues the discussion on the book section 'RIA and education practice of MOOCs,' with the particular focus on the topic of 'educational training design.'

Considering the impact on higher education of rising inequality, unemployment, underemployment and youth marginalization, this study explores risks and opportunities for change of teaching, research and student participation in higher education. Underlining the need to explore alternative designs for a sustainable future, this paper investigates trends and challenges for policy makers and education providers alike. Exploring the vision about what an engaged student could be like in an alternative scenario for higher education this study suggests a common set of general policy goals and pedagogical directions for the future.

It critically examines the role of corridors as unstructured, transitional and influential learning spaces capable to enhance or hinder students’ sense of belonging, engagement and interest in learning through the general discourse expressed on walls. It argues that students already perceive an emphasis on what is conveniently presented as marginal spaces and determined by institutional arrangements focused on discipline and control rather than students’ engagement in learning and communities of research. Starting from a perspective that questions the idea that learning happens only in a classroom where an expert delivers education, while transitional spaces have the simple role to organise walking, explores the accepted distinction between centrality and marginality of informal contexts...
