Xochicalco has been considered a fortification due to the appearances of walls, ditches and bastions. These military attributions found in other archaeological sites in Mesoamerica and beyond have been questioned by some scholars who have said that walls had ritual, ceremonial or territorial delimitation character. Recent excavations at Xochicalco supported by former explorations at one of the main entrance to the city show that between A.D. 650 and 1100 these architectural features had a primarily defensive function, even though they enclosed areas where different kind of activities were conducted, including ritual ones. Even though the city was ready for almost any attack from the front, flanks, escalation, siege or invasion, they never expected an internal riot that led to its final abandonment. The archaeological evidence reinforces the protective nature of the city making no exclusion of any other possible function of those architectural elements.
