Chloroform extract (ALC) from the seeds of Phalaris canariensis were assayed for antiinflammatory... more Chloroform extract (ALC) from the seeds of Phalaris canariensis were assayed for antiinflammatory activity by carrageenan-induced oedema, cotton pellets-induced granuloma, histamine-induced inflammation, croton oil-induced oedema, activity of myeloperoxidase (MPO), adjuvant-induced arthritis, quantification of TNFα, IL-1β, PGE2 and LTB4 and nitric oxide (NO) assay. ALC exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity in different chemically-induced edemas in a dose dependent manner. In the chronic model cotton pellets-induced granuloma showed decreased formation of granuloma tissue. Also caused inhibition of ear inflammation edema and influx of polymorphonuclear cells, as evidence by a decrease in ear thickness and reduced myeloperoxidase activity and inhibit mediators of inflammation as TNFα, IL-1β, PGE2 and LTB4. When RAW 264.7 macrophages were treated with ALC together with LPS a significant inhibition of NO production was detected. These data provide evidence for antiinflamatory effect of P. canariensis by mechanisms that involve a reduced neutrophil influx and decreased production of inflammatory cytokines.
Canola oil and vitamin A were evaluated for their effects on egg characteristics, egg cholesterol... more Canola oil and vitamin A were evaluated for their effects on egg characteristics, egg cholesterol and egg triglycerides (TG) in laying hens prone to heat-stress during summer months. Four levels of canola oil (0, 2, 3 and 4% of diet) in combination with two levels of vitamin A (3,000 or 10,000 IU/kg of diet) were fed to laying hens for a period of 12 weeks. Various egg-quality parameters were measured on weekly basis while, serum TG, egg cholesterol and TG contents were analyzed during the last week of the trial. The results of the study showed that the egg weight, egg mass, yolk weight, Haugh unit score, shell thickness, shell weight and egg breaking-strength were similar (P>0.05) for all canola oil levels supplemented to the laying hens. Higher egg weight and egg mass (P<0.05) were noted for the hens at the diet with 10,000 IU vitamin A /kg of diet whereas, all other egg characteristics were not influenced by increasing the supplemental level of vitamin A. ABSTRACT a b s t r a c t Multiview Video Coding (MVC) is a technique that permits efficient compr... more ABSTRACT a b s t r a c t Multiview Video Coding (MVC) is a technique that permits efficient compression of multiview video. MVC uses variable block size motion and disparity estimation for block matching. This requires an exhaustive search process that involves all possible macro-block partition sizes. We analyze the time complexity of MVC and the methods that have been proposed to speed up motion and disparity estimation. We then propose two new methods: Previous Disparity Vector Disparity Estimation (PDV-DE) and Stereo-Motion Consistency Constraint Motion and Disparity Estimation (SMCC-MDE). PDV-DE exploits the correlation between temporal levels and disparity vectors to speed up the disparity estimation process while SMCC-MDE exploits the geometrical relationship of consecutive frame pairs to speed up motion and disparity estimation. We build a complete low complexity MVC encoding solution that combines our two methods with complementary previous methods to speed up motion and disparity search. We evaluate the complexity of our solution in terms of encoding time and number of search points. Our experimental results show that our solution can reduce the encoding time and number of search points of the standard MVC implementation (JMVM 6.0) using the fast TZ search mode up to 93.7% and 96.9%, respectively, with negligible degradation in the rate-distortion perfor-mance. Compared to the best published results, this is an improvement of up to 11% and 7%, respectively. &amp; 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
