Using the expost facto research design, nine objectives were pursued. These include: 6 strategic objectives, the curriculum content, career prospects of graduates, and lecturer’s pedagogic knowledge and problems militating against the effective implementation of Environmental Education (E.E). A sample of 969 graduates of Environmental Education from 1997-2021, were the respondents. The researchers used an open and closed ended questionnaire with a modified four-point Likert scale response options that they designed as an instrument to collect information. Simple percentages were used for data analysis. The results of the analyses show that the curriculum content of Environmental Education as in force today is not adequate. The knowledge and awareness acquired when they studied E.E. did not help them enough to solve their community environmental problems. However, Environmental Education built their skills and prepared them well to actively participate in solving current environmental problems. Some of the lecturers who taught these respondents at undergraduate levels have the requisite pedagogic knowledge of the subject matter but, the government who is a signatory to the implementation of Environmental Education is not serious about engaging these graduates. Overall, Thirteen problems were identified as factors hampering the effective implementation of Environmental Education curriculum, and 13 feasible solutions were proffered by the respondents. It was concluded that Environmental Education in the University of Calabar has achieved some level of success, despite the fact that there are some issues that needs to be addressed to get the complete success anticipated by the crafter of the program’s objectives. It was recommended among others that a regulatory body should be created to regulate the practice of Environmental Education in Nigeria.

Sixty-one significant rainstorms were registered with a total rainfall amount of 1,359 mm. Correlation results revealed that runoff was positively related to sediment loss across the plots. Vegetation parameters exhibited negative and negligible relationships with runoff volume on the 3-year, 5-year, and 10-year fallow plots. For the 10-year fallow plot, the high crown cover substantially decreased sediment loss (r = 0.232); Slight increase in crown cover on the 5-year fallow plot resulted in a significant reduction in sediment loss (r = -0.445). While for the 3-year fallow plot, tree/shrub density substantially reduced sediment loss (r = -0.534). The results obtained implied that erosional losses (runoff and sediment) occurred on all fallow treatments irrespective of fallow age and that the presence of vegetation considerably decreased the amount of sediment loss. Based on this, the study suggested that vegetation should not be wholly destroyed during land preparation for crop cultivation to speed up vegetation restoration and decrease land degradation.

Anthropogenic activities on water sources have continued to attract the attention of scholars wor... more Anthropogenic activities on water sources have continued to attract the attention of scholars worldwide due to their increasing negative impacts on man, the economy, and its associated environmental consequences. The study examined the anthropogenic impacts on the water quality of the Kedong stream in Idomi, Yakurr, Nigeria. The participatory research method, field observation, and global positioning system (GPS) were used to generate data from the purposively sampled location. Samples were collected weekly during the rainy (May, June and July) and dry seasons (October, November, and December). The data collected were later compared with the World Health Organization (WHO) acceptable standard. The data collected were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results of the independent t-test analysis statistics showed that the calculated t-values were pH (-5.137), DO (4.040), specific conductivity (-17.614), BOD (.559), NO3 (-5.561), NH4 (34.774), PO4 (-5.799), SO4 (-6.810), Fe (1.836), Zn (.545), Mn (-3.687), total coliform (2.811), and faecal Coliform (.242). These parameters differ from the critical because of the numerous human activities in the area. This implies that the water quality varies with the seasons and that anthropogenic activities have significantly impacted on water quality indicators of the Kedong stream in Yakurr
local government area, Nigeria. Results revealed that the water quality of the Kedong stream has a significant difference from the World Health Organisation (WHO) permissible limit with the calculated t-value for pH (-6.277), DO (2.559), specific conductivity (-5.880), BOD (-1.627), NO3 (-91.929), NH4 (.444), PO4 (.663), SO4 (-326.976), Fe (.323), Zn (-179.722), Mn (-14.158), total coliform (2.319) and faecal coliform (2.517) were all different from the critical t-value of about 2.069 at the normal 0.05 level of significance with approximately 23 degrees of freedom. Therefore, the study revealed that the stream receives various inputs, including municipal, industrial, and agricultural pollutants, resulting in considerable changes in water quality. The study recommended improving the stream's physical state cost-effectively and ensuring a low pollutant to meet the requirements of the WHO standard. Again, rural people should be trained to treat contaminated water through boiling and filtering before it can be used for domestic purposes.

This study investigated the emerging trends of counselling for sustainable development among students and teachers of secondary schools in Southern Senatorial District of Cross River State. Five research questions and one hypothesis were raised for this study. Descriptive survey research design was used for this study. Structured questionnaire were administered to 180 respondents using stratified random sampling procedure in selecting 4 secondary schools from four Local Government Areas of the Senatorial District. The data were subjected to descriptive and inferential statistical analyses and interpretation. The study found that, schools lacked adequate physical and human resources needed for effective counselling service delivery. Thus, the level of patronage of the counselling unit in schools was low. As a result, majority (43%) of the students preferred going to their parents/guardians for counselling, (32%) consult their classmates and friends, while (21%) feel free to consult their school counsellors. It was observed that issues students sought for Guidance and Counselling were education, vocational and private while the teachers visit the counsellor on personal issues mostly (61%). Counsellors used one-on-one methods commonly. The respondents (75%) stated that Guidance and Counselling programme is not carried out by schools adequately due to poor funding and negligence. Counselling services rendered in private schools were not significantly different from that of public schools. Therefore, the specialized skills of the school counsellors need to be tapped to prevent, and treat increasing psychosocial problems of the students and teachers to provide sustainable development and reduce personality disaster in secondary schools. It is recommended that, all schools should provide basic resources for guidance and counselling; funding of the Guidance and Counselling programmes in schools should be increased; more school counsellors should be employed.

This study examined the correlation between joblessness and illicit drug consumption among youths in Calabar-South L.G.A, Cross River State, Nigeria. The study adopted a sample population size of 20 respondents (within the age range of 15-35yrs), in a non- experimental relational research design. Data was collected through face-to-face interviews with identified illicit drug users in six identified illicit drug hot spots, using a semi structured interview approach. Five illicit drugs found to be commonly abused in the study area included - marijuana, codeine, rohypnol, tramadol, crack and cocaine. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) technique wasused to establish a relationship between joblessness and the identified illicit drug consumption. The correlation coefficient (r) of -0.205, established an inverse relationship of about 20.5% relatedness between the pair, thereby indicating that joblessness is responsible for the increase in illicit drug use and abuse in the study area by 20.5%, vis-a-vis the current surge in social vices such as armed robbery, gangsterism, kidnapping, rape, murder, prostitution, anomie, that is now associated with the area. For computational ease, joblessness was broken down into three categories, based on the number of years the respondent has been jobless (0-5yrs, 5.5-10yrs and 10.5-15yrs). The General Linear Model (GML) or Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was used to explore the categorical effect of these three categories of joblessness on the free illicit drugs consumed. The result showed a non-statistically significant effect due to the small sample size. However, data obtained showed that respondents are willing to undergo counseling and treatment provided it will lead to employment and better standards of living. The study therefore calls for concerted efforts from the organized private sector and government to provide employment for the unemployed in the study area.

Thus, it is envisaged that if properly applied, it can ameliorate the increasing rise in street urchins in Calabar Metropolis and other societies, where it has constituted a social problem. Data collection for this study was through direct interviews with street urchins in the study area. The check-list was used to serve as a guide in line with the study aim and objectives. Six streets/areas were purposively selected for this study, while 56 street urchins were interviewed, representing about 20% of the 280 estimated population of street urchins in Calabar Metropolis. The Chi Square and Pearson Product Moment Correlation "PPMC) analysis were used to analyze the association between the distributions of street urchins along the sampled streets/area, as well as examine the relationship between counseling and crime rate among street urchins. The Person Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) analysis showed a correlation coefficient (r) of-693 at 0.05 alpha level. This implied a 69.3% inverse relatedness between counseling and the rate of crime committed by street urchins in the study area. The inverse relationship indicates that the more the children are exposed to counseling, the greater the likelihood of them not participating in committing crime. Since the calculated t value of -7.0637 (7.0637) is greater than the table t value of 1.98 (-1.98), hence the alternate hypothesis (H) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H) was rejected. Based on the findings of the study, it is hereby recommended that counseling and rehabilitation centers should be set up for both parents and children by the government. This will complement the efforts of the government through the Operation Skolombo Task Force.
