To this end, we reviewed the changes in the civil aviation security after the events of September 11, 2001, that led those responsible for the international air transport system, to take drastic measures, changing not only the regulation, as well as the modus operandi in airports. In the light of the legislation, the specific duties of private security guards in airport security have been addressed, in Portugal, as well as the requirements to exercise these functions. It was found that private security guards play a key role as protectors responsible for the preservation of airport security value status, complementing the action of the Public Security Forces and Services and releasing them for their most priority functions. It was found that private security guards at airports in Portugal have specialized training which provides to airports a very active and effective security against possible antisocial acts.
