Thick interbedded clastic layers ("lahars") are indicative of a paleo-valley produced during an erosional period that began 0.29 My ago and lasted almost 80 000 years. This corresponds with an average erosion rate of 1 cm/year. These observations require a re-examination of the volcano-structural events during this period, and in particular the end of activity of the southwest rift zone 0.3 My ago.
