In this chapter, we make the assumption that aesthetic emotion is part of kansei feeling based on the cognition of sensori-emotional values evoked in interactions between humans and artefacts within situated contexts, either through immediate sensory perception or bodily interaction. Therefore, we construe aesthetic experience as a kansei element and an emotive cognition process in the construction of product values, and then propose that this phenomenon traverses all layers of product experience in both intrinsic and extrinsic ways, depending on the context, culture and environment. We project that the understanding of kansei as a denominator for aesthetic experience in design will foster value-based approach to the development of products that truly resonate and satisfy the users’ cognitive and emotional sensibilities.

Pottery making is an ancient tradition in many cultures. In Africa where it connects with the secular and sacred traditions of various societies, women have the exclusive preserve of making traditional, domestic and religious pottery to meet the needs of the people. In Nigeria, eminent traditions of pottery making can be found among Gwari peoples of the Federal Capital Territory, Yoruba in Ilorin, Igbo in Afikpo, Ogbu and Inyi, and Hausa in Zaria. This broad spread reflects the diversity of indigenous craft industries among the sprawling ethnic groups of Nigeria. Whereas some cultures such as Abeokuta and Osogbo are renowned for cloth dyeing and their textile industries, Awka in southeastern Nigeria is home to a great blacksmithing tradition and brass smithing is popular in Bida. Likewise, specific regions of the country are famous centers of pottery production. Igbara-Odo in the Southwestern region of Yorubaland is a major site of pottery practices and is therefore selected for this study. The following analysis evaluates Adepelu’s work in a context where some aspects of indigenous cultural heritage, including pottery, currently face imminent extinction because of a disjunction between older generations of potters and descendants who marginalize inherited craft.

Considering the ample resources available for ceramic practices in the country with a teeming population of over 140 million people, there is a promising future for the art, in spite of the effects of globalization and inter-cultural infiltrations. Despite the existing raw material potential, ceramic resources are still underutilized, while the ceramic art programme still cannot produce individuals who can function productively in a highly competitive ceramics market economy. An appraisal of the professional engagement of art and design graduates does not find the objectives of the programme in Nigerian tertiary institutions to be met. This article examines the current status of ceramic art education by identifying existent problems and inherent potentialities, as well as suggesting a way forward through repositioning art education in Nigeria.

Abstract This study identified the popularity of Non-Alcoholic Beverages (NAB) package forms in Akure for the purpose of exploring the possibility of creating visual code for easy product categorization and nomenclature in the non-alcoholic beverage product category. The research methodology involved collection, observation, and recording of the selected NAB through purposive sampling. A total of 218 product names of NABs were collected from the Akure Shopping Mall. By using Microsoft excel and SPSS 17 for analysis, the findings show that there is increase in multiple uses of NAB package forms.
