
Michel GARENNE
Mr. Michel L. Garenne is a demographer (Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, USA, 1982), currently working at the Institut Pasteur in the Epidemiology of Emerging Diseases Unit, Paris, France. His main research interest is on public health issues seen from a demographic perspective. For about 10 years (1981-1990), he directed a series of field studies on population, maternal and child health, nutrition and vaccination in Niakhar, a demographic surveillance system (DSS) located in Senegal, West Africa. Then, he taught demography at the Harvard School of Public Health for five years (1990-1994). Next, he directed research work on African demography, while based at CEPED in Paris, France. In 2002, he joined the Institut Pasteur in Paris, where he directed several research projects, focusing on HIV/AIDS, emerging diseases, and new health problems. He served as a scientific advisor for two DSS sites: Agincourt, South Africa, and Nouna, Burkina-Faso. He taught demography in various French and European universities (Paris-I, Paris VI, Paris XI, Université d’Auvergne/CERDI, Clermont-Ferrand, in France; Heidelberg university in Germany; Antwerp Institute of Tropical Medicine, Belgium; Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain). He directed research seminar series at the School of Higher Studies in Social Sciences (EHESS) and at Institut Pasteur, in Paris. He served on various panels and scientific committees of international and national organizations (United Nations Population Division and Statistics Division, World Health Organization, United Fund for Population Activities, US Academy of Science, INSERM, Wellcome Trust), and as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Heidelberg university, Tropen Institute. He is Honorary Professor at Witwatersrand University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Johannesburg, South Africa. He is author of numerous scientific articles on population and health issues, with main focus on Africa.
