Landscaped areas that were part of the new buildings that housed the “Emperor’s Schools”, 1872-18... more Landscaped areas that were part of the new buildings that housed the “Emperor’s Schools”, 1872-1877, are analyzed from the perspective of the modernization project configured in Brazil during the Second Reign, aligned with the city model of the great European powers. Based on historical archive documents and plant inventories currently occurring in the six remaining schools, an attempt is made to evaluate the motivations and criteria used in the selection of species. It is revealed that species were favored for their aesthetic characteristics, unrelated to the appreciation of the Brazilian flora that enchanted laypeople and naturalists for its richness and plasticity.
