Phong and bump mapped shading, reflection and reflection mapping, gaseous object rendering and video mapping are incorporated fully in hardware with a MIMD structure. Shaded and texture mapped pixels are rendered at 3.8 ns/pixel which is equivalent to 1.2 million triangle polygons (100 pixels/s) with hidden surface removal. In the design of the Phong and bump mapped shading circuit, we used angular parameters for defining surface and light source normals instead of vector. This enables the circuit-scale less than 10000 gates/circuit. The chip is fabricated with a 940000 gate standard cell, 0.3 μm CMOS in a TCP/BGA package. The paper describes the hardware architecture and its implementation technologies of the Phong and bump mapped shading in an ASIC

To avoid serious damage to accelerator components, a fast active machine protection system (MPS) stops the production of new bunches if hazardous machine conditions are detected. This paper gives an overview of the MPS topology and its subsystems. Furthermore, we present results from the commissioning of the fast beam interlock system that has for the first time allowed to operate the accelerator with macropulses of up to 600 bunches.

In this paper, we present a rate-distortion (R-D) approach to analyze these multiple-decoding algorithms for RS codes. This approach is first used to understand the asymptotic performance-versus-complexity trade-off of multiple error-and-erasure decoding of RS codes. By defining an appropriate distortion measure between an error pattern and an erasure pattern, the condition for a single error-and-erasure decoding to succeed reduces to a form where the distortion is compared to a fixed threshold. Finding the best set of erasure patterns for multiple decoding trials then turns out to be a covering problem which can be solved asymptotically by rate-distortion theory. Next, this approach is extended to analyze multiple algebraic soft-decision (ASD) decoding of RS codes. Both analytical and numerical computations of the R-D functions for the corresponding distortion measures are discussed. Simulation results show that proposed algorithms using this approach perform better than other algorithms with the same complexity.

However, the apparent inhibitory activity of new leads can be misleading because most culture media do not reproduce an environment relevant to infection in vivo . In this study, while screening for novel anti-tuberculars, we uncovered how carbon metabolism can affect antimicrobial activity. Novel pyrimidine -imidazoles (PIs) were identifi ed in a whole-cell screen against Mycobacterium tuberculosis . Lead optimization generated in vitro potent derivatives with desirable pharmacokinetic properties, yet without in vivo effi cacy. Mechanism of action studies linked the PI activity to glycerol metabolism, which is not relevant for M. tuberculosis during infection. PIs induced self-poisoning of M. tuberculosis by promoting the accumulation of glycerol phosphate and rapid ATP depletion. This study underlines the importance of understanding central bacterial metabolism in vivo and of developing predictive in vitro culture conditions as a prerequisite for the rational discovery of new antibiotics.

The approach consists of two phases, which separately construct the approximation geometry and the normal field of a subdivision surface. It first exploits quartic triangular Bé zier patches to approximate the geometry of the subdivision surface by interpolating a grid of sampled points. To remedy the artifact of discontinuity of normal fields between adjacent patches, a continuous normal field is then reconstructed by approximating the tangent vector fields of the subdivision surfaces with quartic triangular Bé zier patches. For regular triangles, the approach reproduces the associated subdivision patches, quartic three-directional box splines.
