The research on early identification of bacterial from juveniles top shell (Trochus niloticus L.)... more The research on early identification of bacterial from juveniles top shell (Trochus niloticus L.) and giant clam (Tridacna squamosa Linn.) was conducted at Unhas’s hatchery at Barrang Lompo island during August-October 2006. Bacteriology test was done at Microbiology Laboratory of Biology Department, Math and Science Faculty, Hasanuddin University, Makassar. The quantitative test was done using Most Probable Number (MPN) and Standard Plate Count (SPC) methods. While the qualitative test included bacteria colony observation, macroscopic, microscopic, and biochemical test. Macroscopic observation was done by assessing the form, elevation, color, ridge, and inner structure of bacterial colony. Microscopic observation was conducted by using Gram and spora stain. The result of MPN method shows the average total bacteria for juveniles top shell is 17.5 x 102 cell/ml and for giant clam is 6.65 x 102 cell/ml, while SPC results indicate the average total bacteria for juveniles top shell is 4...

The study aimed to determine β-Sitosterol activity isolated compound from hydroid A. cupressina Lamoureoux as antimitotic compound towards early cleavage of zygote of Sea Urchin T. gratilla Linn. Antimitotic treatments were β-Sitosterol (concentration 1 µg/ml, 10 µg/ml and100 µg/ml), positive control vincristine (concentration 0.01 µg/ml, 0.1 µg/ml, and 1 µg/ml) and negative control. A protozoa-free seawater was used in this assay. The results revealed that β-Sitosterol compound had the highest inhibition activity at concentration of 100 μg/ml was 69.22 % with IC-50 on 0.95 µg/ml which could develop as cancer chemotherapy compound.
The Research on “Coral Coverage in Baranglompo Island and Bone Batang Island Based on Reef Check ... more The Research on “Coral Coverage in Baranglompo Island and Bone Batang Island Based on Reef Check Method” was conducted in April 2016. The aims of this study was to determine and to compare the condition of reefs in Baranglompo and Bone Batang Islands based on the percentage of life coral cover by using Reef Check methods. This study also aims to determine which factors that most affect the percentage of coral cover on each island i.e: abiotic factors (temperature, salinity and substrate in the form of rock, rubble, sand, silt/clay); biotic factors (soft coral, recent killed coral, algae, sponges, fish and invertebrates associate) and anthropogenic factors (garbage, ilegal fishing/bombs, stun, anchors, nets) were also investigated. Percentage of life coral cover obtained by Line Intercept Transect (LIT) along 100 meters at a depth of 3 meters and 10 meters. The results showed that the condition of coral reefs in Baranglompo was classified as moderate with an average percentage coral ...

This study aims to determine the health conditions of coral reefs in the waters of Gonda Beach, Polewali-Mandar, West Sulawesi Province, using health tables coral. Data retrieval is carried out using the "Line Intercept Transect (LIT)" method with 50-meter transect in depths of 3 m and 10 m,The parameter that observed was the colour of coral colony. Data processing is carried out by entering approximately 20 coral colonies that have been found in the entry excel coral watch that are already available with standardized data processing columns. The results of this study indicate that coral health conditions in the coastal waters of Gonda, Polewali - Mandar, West Sulawesi Province classified as in the unhealthy category. The highest percentage of coral colonies is branched coral colonies.

The purpose of research was to determine the bioactivity of hexadecanoic acid and β-sitosterol through toxicity test using Artemia salina Leach as antioxidant. The research was conducted at the Laboratory of Environmental and Marine Sciences, Department of Biology and Biochemistry Laboratory, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Hasanuddin, Makassar. The method used in this study was Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) for toxicity and Diphenil picry hidrazil (DPPH) methods test for antioxidant. The results showed that hexadecanoic acid has a high toxicity and β-sitosterol has no toxicity based toxicity tests using Artemia salina Leach. The hexadecanoic acid and β-sitosterol did not have antioxidant activity.

This research was intended to know the potential of methanol tunicates extract of proposed tunicates as an antibacterial MRSA. Tunicates were collected from Barrang Lompo waters of Sangkarang Archipelago of South Sulawesi Indonesia. Samples were dried, then the active compound was extracted used methanol solvent according to a standard procedure elsewhere. Tunicate’s extract was prepared into three different concentrations: 10%, 15%, and 20%, were tested against MRSA bacteria. A test of inhibition zone was applied at 24 h and 48 h incubation time in order to determine the bioactivity of tunicate’s extract towards MRSA. The result indicates that crude extracts of tunicates P. Pyura sp at all concentration performs anti bacteria activity against MRSA. This study concluded that tunicate Pyura sp has bacte...

The research aims to assess the diversity of gastropod species in Balangdatu waters. Sampling was conducted using quadrate transect method systematically. Three replicates of transect were applied for each station. The result indicates there were 34 species of gastropods from 14 genera and 14 families were found. Diversity index from every station varies from 1,661 to 2, 899. These values range from low to moderate. The diversity, Evenness, and dominance indices showed that Balangdatu waters still in good condition and sustain habitat for gastropod.
