I am a nurse with over 20 years experience in acute care, long term care, psychiatry, critical care and community and have just completed my MBBS, MD. I also have a PhD from the University of Alberta, which focused in healthcare utilization by seniors with mental illness. I am an award winning author in the U.S. for my book titled, "Workplace mental health for nurse managers". I just published my 2nd book, again with Springer Publishing in New York, titled: Fast Facts: PTSD for healthcare clinicians".

Autoimmune and auto-inflammatory diseases affect over 50million Americans. Both of these disorder... more Autoimmune and auto-inflammatory diseases affect over 50million Americans. Both of these disorders share common characteristics such as frequent episodes of inflammation followed by symptoms that may include rash, fever, joint pain, and joint swelling. These symptoms result when the body attacks its own tissue due to dysregulation of the innate immune system causing increased inflammation throughout the body. Over the past decade, numerous research articles have shows the benefit of complementary medicine and nutrition in the treatment of chronic inflammation. Despite evidenced based clinical research that supports the use of alternative medicine, many insurance companies and medical providers choose not to advocate for the use of these supplements. This paper reviewed the ongoing proposed benefits of Turmeric, a spice from the root Curcuma longa, a member of the ginger family as an anti-inflammatory agent. In-vitro and in-vivo research show various activities, such as anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antifungal, cytokines release, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, enhancing of the apoptotic process, and antiangiogenic properties of Turmeric. Challenges of treating and managing chronic inflammatory disease, and alternative treatment options were also highlighted.

Abstract Purpose In this chapter, we explicate the evolution of Canadian corrections, the politic... more Abstract Purpose In this chapter, we explicate the evolution of Canadian corrections, the political, social and judicial realities that have shaped punishment and imprisonment over history. We reveal how such factors continue to leave their mark on the current Canadian federal criminal justice system and its structures of incarceration. Design/methodology/approach A comprehensive review of accessible literatures detailing the nation’s development of punishment and incarceration is presented. The history of imprisonment is traced up to the current year and the role of penal populism as theorized by Garland (2001) and, later, Pratt (2007) is presented to discern the motivations for the current punitive correctional rhetoric, as well as its impact on conditions of confinement and program implementation in penitentiaries. Findings Canada’s correctional history is largely shaped by how punishment is defined and how such definitions are influenced by members of society; including victims, perpetrators, politicians and media personalities. The realities of current conditions of confinement have been impacted by social and political pressures that encourage increasingly punitive policies oriented towards ‘tough on crime’ initiatives. Current corrections are characterized by overcrowding, concerns about rehabilitative programming and resource allocation and mental health care. Originality/value Recent legislative amendments have solidified a ‘tough on crime’ agenda in Canada, however the process underlying the movement towards the acceptance, even public demand, for such legislative changes remain in need of dissemination; particularly in light of the decades of decreasing crime rates in the country.

Quality of Work Life of Novice Nurses

Background: High stress is related to the high turnover rate of new nursing staffs. Accordingly, ... more Background: High stress is related to the high turnover rate of new nursing staffs. Accordingly, determining how to retain novice nurses is critical. Purpose: Understand the relationship between novice nurses' basic characteristics, personality traits, and work-related stress. Methods: This cross-sectional study used purposive sampling to recruit novice nurses working in the general wards and intensive care unit of a medical centre (179 questionnaires). Results: (1) Length of past clinical nursing experience, and self-perceived compatibility with current position was found to be significantly correlated with work-related stress. (2) Personality traits and work-related stress were significantly and negatively correlated. (3) "Length of past clinical nursing experience," "self-perceived compatibility with the current position," "emotional stability," and "conscientiousness" were able to predict work-related stress with an explanatory power of 46%. Conclusion: If will allow nursing students to familiarize themselves with the clinical work model early, add to the clinical nursing experience, and lower the turnover rate for novice nurses.

This qualitative research study examines factors influencing the quality of work life of novice n... more This qualitative research study examines factors influencing the quality of work life of novice nurses (less than 2 years&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39; experience) in the Eastern Regional Health Authority in St. John&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39;s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Although novice nurses are highly motivated to provide quality patient care, they encounter many sources of stress, including &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;quot;difficult personalities,&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;quot; inadequate orientation and mentoring, and horizontal violence from nursing and medical colleagues. These stressors are compounded by staffing shortages and heavy workloads. Supportive mentoring and adequate orientation are key factors to successful transition.

Bullying in the workplace is characterized as the on-going health or career endangering mistreatment of an employee, by one or more of their peers or higher-ups and reflects the misuse of actual and/or perceived power or position that undermines a nurse's ability to succeed or do good, or leaves them feeling hurt, frightened, angry or powerless (American Nurses Association, 2015). As nurses, both individually and collectively, we have a responsibility to demand the creation of healthy workplace environments in which to ensure the expression of caring remains part of our nursing practice. Healthy workplace environments will initiate caring encounters between peers, as well as between nurses and patients; recognizing that everyone benefits. The essence of caring must be nurtured and valued by the nursing profession for it to continue to develop and flourish.
