During the stage of identity formation, adolescents seek independence from their parents and desire acceptance from their peers. A basic qualitative interpretive approach was utilized for this research design with racial socialization and critical race feminism as the theoretical frameworks. Four at-risk African American female eighth grade students and four African American parents/guardians were interviewed, to understand how racial socialization of parents influenced students' identity formation and academic achievement. Documents such as report cards and disciplinary referrals were reviewed to confirm or refute the data obtained through the interviews. Data analysis utilizing memos, categorizing, and document analysis, produced five themes: Cultural Preparation for School, Advocating and Developing Racial Identity, Importance of Self-Awareness, Middle School Life, and Adolescent Black Identity Development. The findings of this study suggest that at-risk African American female eighth grade students' greatest challenge racially will come from their efforts to acculturate to the White Euro-American school culture and the influence of popular culture. In addition, they should be ready for challenges related to strained relationships with middle school teachers and administrators.

Five distinct types of missing data treatments were examined: deletion (both listwise and pairwise methods), deterministic imputation (with imputations based on the sample mean, simple regression and multiple regression), stochastic imputation (mean, simple regression and multiple regression), maximum likelihood estimation (ML) and multiple imputation (MI). Design factors included in the study were sample size, total proportion of missing data, and the proportion of missing data occurring in the upper stratum of each predictor. The success of each method was evaluated based on the sample estimate of R2 and each standardized regression coefficient. Results suggest that the stochastic multiple regression imputation procedure evidenced the best performance in providing unbiased estimates of the parameters of interest....

Furthermore, the study investigated whether sample size, proportion of systematically missing data above the mean of the regressor, and the percentage of missing data affected the effectiveness of the eight missing data treatments. One thousand samples of size 50, 100, and 200 were generated per data set. The percentages of missing data were 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, and 60%, occurring either on one regressor or across both regressors. The proportions of missing data that were above the mean value of the regressors were 0.60, 0.70, 0.80, or 0.90. The data were analyzed by computing effect sizes obtained from the missing data treatment conditions relative to the complete sample condition (i.e., 0% missing data)....

Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients generated between the dependent variable and three independent variables yielded significant results. The regression model did not significantly predict a program's percentage of graduates passing the RHIA certification examination.

A second purpose was to examine whether there was a significant difference between (a) levels of principal tenure and levels of principal educational experience on elementary school student achievement and (b) levels of principal stability and levels of principal educational experience on elementary school student achievement. The findings revealed that the school-level variables were stronger predictors of student achievement than principal-level variables. However, for both grade 3 and grade 5, principal tenure was a significant predictor across subject areas tested. As the length of a principal’s tenure at a school increased, the schools mean scale scores increased. Findings also revealed that schools with greater principal stability had higher school mean sc...

Findings of the study provide insight into best practices associated with the development and support of new teachers. The data were collected through the use of a survey consisting of Likert scale and open-ended response items related to mentoring processes and perceptions of the rst-year teaching experience. Elementary-level teachers had a more positive perception of their overall experience than middle and high school teachers. First-year teachers voiced concerns about the availability of their mentors both before and during the school year. There was a positive relationship between feelings of empowerment and job satisfaction. Additionally, 63% of the respondents indicated they had already determined they did not see themselves teaching in 10 years. note: This manuscript has been peer-reviewed, accepted, and endorsed by the National Council of Professors of ...

A second purpose was to examine principals’ perceptions of how their schools transition freshmen and how these transition strategies and arrangements worked. Of the eight ANOVAs conducted, only one analysis was statistically significant between the school configurations. In facilities using a freshman campus, high school students with disabilities earned significantly more core credit units than their counterparts in schools using no freshman facility. During individual interviews, all 15 principles emphasized using transition strategies to help students adjust to high school.

Three factors that prevent meaningful school changes (thinking, beliefs, and the values of schooling) were discussed and analyzed through an educator’s lenses. The literature indicates that while school organizations have changed, school leaders are still using leadership and management performance tools of the past and calls for school leaders and other educators to rethink new effective and efficient leadership strategies to improve student achievement and school performance. Strategies to achieve meaningful school change are discussed.

In the early history of organizations observation, trial and error became key to greater organization performance. The sharing of knowledge overtime became the heart of the learning organization. Once organizations became the subject of formal study scholars discovered the potential for improved performance was greatly increased. This new knowledge applies to schools as schools are one of the best examples of systems thinking in action. School leaders are now learning they are leading a system in fact the most dynamic type of system, a living synergistic social system.

Principals’ responded to survey items measured on a five-point Likert scale ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). A stratified random sample of principals from Georgia’s elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools participated in the study. Principals’ reported using computer technology to complete administrative and managerial tasks. However, principals’ indicated a widespread need for more professional development opportunities to increase their capabilities and to infuse computer technology into the teaching and learning process. In addition, p...

The PCTS developmental process yielded a 40-item survey with groups of items comprising five subscales (i.e., curriculum integration, perceptions, acquired expertise, needs assessment, and professional development). Principals' responses to items within the five subscales was measured on a five-point Likert scale ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). An expert panel reviewed the instrument plus exploratory factor analyses and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted. This analysis resulted in a restructured instrument with seven subscales instead of the five hypothesized subscales and four fewer items. Measurement invariance of the instrument was found for gender and race. Cronbach's alpha for the 36 items was .94 and subscale Cronbach's alpha ranged from .78 to .90.

The purpose of this study was to examine the causal effects among the variables mentoring, job stress, incivility, organizational commitment, and occupational commitment on nursing faculty job satisfaction and intent to stay in academia. A structural equation model was generated and tested to examine the relationships among variables and to identify the direct effects, indirect effects, and total effects on job satisfaction and intent to stay in academia. The sample consisted of 118 associate degree nursing faculty in the state of Georgia who were primarily female, Caucasian, master's prepared, and employed fulltime in academia. Nursing faculty responded to the 87-item Nursing Faculty Job Satisfaction Questionnaire which was created from six previously validated instruments. I would also like to thank my family. My husband, Greg, has always been my biggest encourager and had the most faith in my ability to complete this dissertation. You sacrificed a lot for me to get this far and I could not have completed this without you. Next, to my children, Josie, Dalton, and Anslee, thank you for allowing me to be absent at times. I regret there were times that I had to miss your games, school activities, and family outings. However, through this process, I hope you have witnessed the meaning of lifelong learning.

The di.fferences in the effectiveness of five common treatments of missing dE%ta on estimates of R-squared valuta:: and each of the two sLandardized regression weights is also investigated. Bootstrap sample sizes of 50, 100, and 200 were drawn from three sets of actual field data. Randomly missing data were created within each sample, and the parameter estimates were compared with those obtained from the same samples with no missing data. The results indicate that three imputation procedures (mean substitution, simple, and multiple regression imputation) produced biased estimates of R-squared values and both regression weights. Two deletion procedures (listwise and pairwise) provided accurate parameter estimates with up to 60% of the data missing. Twelve data tables, 9 figures, and a 20-item list of references are included.
