It is common, that an enterprise or an organization executes more than one project in parallel. These projects may share the same resources and may have differing goals. Based on experience the order of task execution is a key factor, having a major impact on the key performance indicators. Our paper presents an extended model and a scheduling method for resource constrained project scheduling problems.

Despite of the variety of project execution implementation of the different domains it is visible that projects are sharing fundamental similiarities. Based on experiment the success of a project exuecution depends - next to maintained data quality and execution follow-up - on the ability to schedule the activities in an optimized way. Scheduling of the activities is even more complicated if an organization is executing more than one project at the same time. This paper presents our conceptual and implementation work in area of multi-project scheduling.

The solution approach is based on an integration of enterprise resource planning system (ERP) and an advanced planning and scheduling application (APS). An ERP system software component defines a set of projects with their details (activities, due dates, processing times, precedence constraints, etc.) and the available resources with their capabilities and real constraints. The user can specify many objective functions and their priorities. The goal of this scheduling problem type is to create a detailed execution plan that meets all the hard constraints and gives a near optimal compromised solution from objective functions point of view. In real execution environments, more than one projects may run in parallel, and they may require the same resources. For example, projects may produce the standard type of products, and they use the same manufacturing resources. In different decision-making situations, dynamic priorities may be defined for projects or activities to express the relative importance of items. The paper focuses on modeling and solving of multi-objective multi-project scheduling problems, and we present the integration of ERP and APS systems.

Companies execute several projects simultaneously and these projects usually share the same resources resulting in conflicting situations. Since all projects have different requirements, constraints and goals that need to be achieved, the creation of a company-wide optimal schedule is difficult if all the aspects of each project are to be taken into consideration. Our paper presents an extended model and a scheduling problem-solving approach for resource-constrained, multi-project scheduling problems. In addition to defining the theoretical solution, its experimental implementation and results are presented.
