In this paper we therefore analyze how the knowledge from electronics and textiles are used as sources for designing interactive e--textile artefacts using semeiotic terminology as it has been introduced by C.S Peirce and adopted for design by Chow and Jonas. We briefly introduce their model and terminology of knowledge exchange or 'transfer' between artefacts as a basis for our own categorization of the interaction models, gestures and contexts from a cross--section of state--of--the--art e-textile projects. We observe that the e--textiles that transfer features from textiles to electronics in an original way are more interesting from an interaction design point of view and suggest strategies for incorporating aspects of transfer in the process of developing e--textiles.

Investigating their appropriateness to gather gender specific insights, we are particularly interested in their potential of avoiding the recreation of gender stereotypes. In this context, we reflect the design of our research environments, methods and tools according to their unconscious gender assumptions which might cause stereotype answers. Our empirical study, called Women's Phone, aimed both at involving female prospective users to avoid gender clichés and to critically investigate conventional and stereotypical design solutions of mobile phones. We judge the suitability of the methods used in two respects:

It is currently used for rendering 2-dimensional virtual acoustic scenes using either Wave Field Synthesis, binaural rendering or Vector Based Amplitude Panning. A further extension to higher order Am- bisonics is planned. However, in this paper we will focus on the WFS functionality. We also describe the physical setup of the WFS system in- stalled at the Usability Laboratory of Deutsche Telekom Lab- oratories, the natural habitat of the SoundScape Renderer. Finally, we present a working draft for an XML file for- mat enabling the exchange of acoustic scenes between differ- ent software systems. This Audio Scene Description Format (ASDF) is entirely open and we encourage everyone to par- ticipate in its further definition.
