Researches claim that preschoolers are in a constant learning and their learning process in preschool starts the minute they enter the preschools. If design and arrangement of spaces follow the educational-based strategies of learning experiences, the messages that spaces send to teachers and children will enhance the philosophy and aim of the educational. This study has considered preschool setting as a whole entity and has focused on the intersection of pedagogy, design and users with the intentionof expanding the understanding about early childhood spaces. Since every single part of the preschool setting plays a role in children’s development and learning process, in this study we have classified children’s experiences in preschool setting as arrival and departure, learning stations, common and private spaces and features that are worth considering in relation with the condition of preschool settings. Theoretical framework established in this research create a guideline for designers to learn about the main requirements of a preschoolers and preschool pedagogy. Also this study carries a universal perception over the subject of preschool education and has discussed the common feature of preschool education adopted in most of the countries. However, it needs to be considered that preschool education in differs based on the differences in cultures, religious, economy and regional features. No sponso

After the war in 1974, refugees were relocated into abandoned homes containing objects abandoned by Greek Cypriots, who were also displaced by the war. Using an ethnographic research method, the results suggest that Turkish Cypriot refugees have developed new emotive attachment to abandoned homes through collecting happy family memories over time. Accordingly, they decorated their homes with the family-related material objects as a mirror of their family memories experienced in both their current and former homes. Currently, abandoned homes are described as a family place where refugees are happiest, while it was an uncanny place in the beginning. Finally, this research suggests new directions for research that places emotions at the heart of a project to investigate the development of new attachment to abandoned homes in psychology and sociology.

As the result of being an island and having a strategic location, Cyprus had been occupied by different civilizations throughout history. Since the island faced many attacks throughout history, different buildings and structures were built to defend the island from its enemies. Defence heritage should be identified, documented and conserved since they are important part of the collective memory of the island. The only way to sustain these monuments is to reuse with an appropriate function since they have already lost their original function. The purpose of the study is to highlight the significance of defence heritage of the island and propose reuse strategies as a cultural tourism resource. The method of the study to includes literature surveys and observations through site survey. These data are used for developing reuse strategies by considering defence heritage as a cultural heritage tourism resource. Defence heritage structures can be used as tool for contributing cultural tourism of the island. Defence heritage is an important part of cultural heritage; therefore, they should be transferred for further generations through conservation and reuse.

The conservation of military structures as well as other heritage buildings is important since they are monuments that represent a sense of identity, and national pride, bearing a message of oppression. The only way to sustain these monuments is re-functioning with an appropriate approach since they have already lost their original function. However, the problem is to select the most appropriate function according to the structural and formal characteristics of the monuments. The study aims to question the success of the adaptive reuse projects in terms of appropriateness of the museum function and its implementation in castles. Generally, there is a tendency to convert old castles into museums. Due to the physical characteristics, museum can be accepted as a compatible function, if museums are designed with correct approaches. Otherwise, the heritage buildings will lack a living function and become disused or abandoned. The study is a comparative research among castles located in Cyprus and converted to museums. Four castles of the castles in Cyprus that have been converted to museums have been evaluated and compared in terms of the use of military establishments as museums. The selected castles were evaluated in two parts with defined criteria: firstly, in terms of conservation principles and secondly, in terms of museography. According to the results, generally the adaptive reuse projects have sustained the cultural identity of the heritage buildings; however, they have failed in bringing about efficient use and achieving socio-cultural benefits. Although structures have been preserved physically, most of them lack a living function and visitors. Existing exhibitions should be supported by other exhibitions or activities to attract more visitors. Also, successful museum design approaches around the world should be observed and analysed. Then, the existing museums should be redesigned .

In their lifetime, historic buildings may lose their function and become abandoned. Adaptive reuse is a way for a historic building to survive by changing the function according to the needs of its region. Museography is a field that fundamentally contributes to the collection, conservation and protection of a significant part of the movable cultural heritage. It comprises the methods and techniques related to the practical function of museums. In a museum the most important concern is the organization of displays, the use of light, circulation in the place and accessibility. If a museum is in an architectural heritage, this situation may create challenges both for designers and museographers since important concerns for conservation and museography should be taken into consideration together. Military establishments were mainly constructed for defence purpose including castles, military posts and towers; however, the reason of construction, forms similar characteristics among military buildings such as introverted organization and solid facades. The aim of the study is to question the success of the adaptive reuse projects in terms of appropriateness of the museum function in a military establishment both in a conservation approach and museography approach. The study is a comparative research. Two selected castles will be compared in terms of use of military establishments as museums. The castles are selected from two different countries: Sforzesco Castle in Milan, Italy and Kyrenia Castle in Kyrenia, Cyprus which was used as castles before and are now converted to museums. The buildings are evaluated in two parts with the defined criteria: firstly in terms of conservation principles and secondly in terms of museography. In order to Defence Sites II 125

Sustaining traditional residential architecture is important in terms of cultural continuity. The study questions the appropriateness of the new functions of heritage buildings through the evaluation of socio-cultural, economic and physical aspects of the adaptive reuse of traditional urban houses in the Walled City of Nicosia. The selected buildings were used as houses before and new functions have been assigned to them. This article aims to measure the success of the adaptive reuse projects by identifying the benefits gained from the adaptive reuse. As the data collection method of study, questionnaires were conducted with architects, who are registered and active members of the chamber in the northern sector of Cyprus. The findings show that traditional urban houses have been preserved physically but the buildings lack a living function due to the neglect of socio-cultural and economic aspects in the decision-making process.

Due to this, the continuity of culture in rural areas is closely related with the sustainability of traditional residential architecture. Cyprus is a Mediterranean island, which has managed to sustain her rich cultural heritage against the many economical, socio-cultural and political changes she has gone through. There is a need for new dwellings in rural areas and this demand is increasing rapidly. In these areas which are physical environments where sustainability can be maintained easily, the Social Housing Department of the North Cyprus Government has made several studies for the proposal of prototype house plans' as a solution to the above mentioned problem of a need for housing and the prevention of migration to cities. However, upon analysing the architecture of traditional dwellings; and the lifestyles of the people who live in these rural areas, it has been observed that these projects, with incomprehensible, strict and totalitarian design principles, are incompatible with local culture and conditions. It is suggested that there is a need for an appropriate environment for the continuation of the lifestyle that is natural to the people that live within them. On the contrary, these projects form the basis of a step towards a monotonous settlement development which does not respect either the values of traditional architecture or local identities. It is extremely important that the correct steps are taken for both the conservation of the existing physical environment and for handling the issues of new settlement developments in relation to production relationships and cultural sustainability. The main aim of this paper is to draw attention to the traditional design principles that can be re-interpreted in the proposed 'prototyped dwellings' in North Cyprus. In order to achieve this aim, a case study, based on observations, literature survey and site survey techniques has been carried out.

Where heritage buildings can no longer function with its original use, proposing a new function is inevitable in order to preserve the significance of the heritage building. The purpose of the research is to provide a comprehensive review of the factors affecting adaptive reuse decision-making and to develop a holistic model for adaptive reuse strategies for heritage buildings. Firstly, the data has been collected through literature survey and content analysis. Then, selected adaptive reuse examples have been investigated in the light of the defined factors. At the end, the model proposal has been developed according to the results. The model can be used to propose adaptive reuse strategies for the abandoned or disused heritage buildings. On the other hand, it can be used to evaluate the appropriateness of the new use for refunctioned heritage buildings and to define the problems in the decision-making. In order to decide the most appropriate adaptive reuse strategy for the heritage buildings all the factors must be taken into consideration holistically. The model proposes a qualitative approach and the adaptive reuse strategies can be developed according to the decision makers and policy issues of the related context.

However, little attention has been paid to the context of involuntary relocation which involves place attachment of refugees and bases of emotional bonding after displacement. Thus, this paper investigates issues arising from involuntary relocation of Turkish Cypriot refugees from Southern to the Northern part of the island of Cyprus. After the internal conflicts and series of events, in between 1965-1968 participants in this study were relocated into Refugee Houses in Refugee Village in Nicosia. Along with spatial mobility, Turkish Cypriot Refugees had to experience various living environments. This is appeared to mention three different forms of the living environments which are (i) original-untransformed housing unit and its neighbourhood (ii) transformed housing unit and its neighbourhood and (iii) childhood house and its neighbourhood. Therefore, the main aim of the present study is to investigate place attachment, its benefits for each type of living environment and the role of childhood place attachment benefits on Turkish Cypriot Refugees to their new living environments. In this sense, data obtained from field survey, participant observation, semi-structured in-depth interviews and drawing respectively. The results of the study suggest that each living environment involved different benefits of place attachment and memory is the significant benefits that connect the participant to a childhood place. Although participants are 51-54 years of residence with the feeling secure and aesthetic pleasure in Refugee Village, they are not attached to their current house and its neighbourhood in reality. The childhood memory of Turkish Cypriot Refugees is a determinant benefit of their attachment to place. Only satisfying with places is inadequate to be an attachment to place.
