The author’s point is well taken that the diversity of life trajectories open to women (and men) now differs radically from the required early marriage of the past. But the argument that unmarried women are at the heart of an independent nation isn’t any more convincing to me than the alternative possibility that the growth of ideologies of individualism and autonomy have made possible the choices women are now free to make. And of course, both are probably true. This book exists to justify the choices women make to remain single for all or large chunks of their lives. If it sells well, we will have good evidence that American women feel the need for that reassurance. In any case, it’s a delicious read for the beach, or with a glass of wine before bed. And it will provide you with a treasure chest of stories for your next dinner party. y

The contemporary pursuit of parenthood evinces a similar shift from obligation to desire and from an economic to an emotional calculus. Here too, gay men and lesbians serve as pioneers, with planned gay male parenthood occupying particularly avant-garde terrain and Los Angeles County. This article analyzes gay male narratives of parental desire and decision-making drawn from ethnographic research on gay male intimacy and kinship in Los Angeles, the unlikely global epicenter of gay paternity. It identifies a ‘passion for parenthood’ continuum in which most men occupy an intermediate zone which leads them to situational paternity or childlessness contingent upon intimate relationships. Heterosexual ‘situations’ lead most straight men to paternity, while homosexual ‘situations’ lead a majority of gay men to childlessness. Yet the very success gay men achieve pu...

Under data stream model, data streams are continuous, and the algorithm can only scan data once. Furthermore, data streams are unlimited, while the available storage space is limited. Therefore, it is usually not possible to excavate all accurate frequent items in data. The paper put forward the improved algorithm WFIC of digging approximate frequent items in data streams, and the algorithm can dynamically adjust weight of all kinds of data, which will make the rank of significant data more top-ranked. Experimental results show that the algorithm has good performance, which can effectively determine frequent items in data streams.

Employing a comparative historical analysis of U.S. and South African jurisprudence, ideology, and cultural politics, we examine efforts to expand, restrict, and regulate the gender and number of legally recognized conjugal bonds. South African family jurisprudence grants legal recognition to both same-sex marriage and polygyny, while the United States prohibits and resists both. However, social and material conditions make it easier to practice family diversity in the U.S. than in South Africa. Our analysis of the very different histories of polygamy and same-sex marriage in the two societies suggests the centrality of racial politics to marriage regimes, yielding paradoxical narratives about the implications of legal same-sex marriage for the future of polygamy and sexual democracy. If there is a slippery marital slope, we argue, it does not...

They compare the familiar pattern father-mother-child with a vague notion of “no family,” or assume that another kind of family is replacing the nuclear one. It is much more likely . . . that instead of one kind replacing the other there will be a huge variety of ways of living together or apart which will continue to exist side by side.—Ulrich Beck and Elisabeth Beck-Gernsheim (1992, p. 141)
