Its responsibilities fall in the line protocol implementation and in the performance supervision area. The hardware and software structures of the LCU are explained as well as the characteristics of the whole system.

The required characteristics and the reasons to buit this type of network together with the general performances and some special advantages are given. The network has been designed to be used at all power plants and substations of a transportation and part of a distribution network at a regional level. The main lines of the design and some important implementation details are explained. The problems encountered in its development and the possible weak points of the approach are analyzed.

The main goal is to analyze the routing requirements that will facilitate the future formal specification of a QoS-aware multipath routing algorithm for the coming SEN's data networks in the high voltage segment where long-distance mesh data networks will be a future challenge for engineering and research. In this paper, the study is focused on requirement specification regarding distance-vector routing algorithms that reduce the overall overhead of routing information needed in the network, thus preserving the scalability feature. In order to obtain a detailed study of the performance of these protocols, the proposal "Distributed path computation with Intermediate Variables" and several proposed improvements have been modeled using OPNET modeler in an aim to evaluate the performance of this protoco...

The distribution Smart Grid needs high performance communication networks capable of handling QoS, an issue that is addressed by the present paper. The proposed algorithm is a merger between a genetic algorithm (GA) and Ticket-Based Routing (TBR), which is an on-demand routing protocol for ad hoc networks that provide quality of service. A suitable parameterization of the GA parameters is needed in order to use this protocol in the coming Smart Grid networks. The resulting routing protocol, named genetic algorithm with TBR algorithm for Smart Grids (GATAS), is an adapted intelligent evolution of the TBR. The performance of TBR has been improved by reducing the overhead of routing packets in the network and by minimizing the communication latency due to its on-demand behavior. Experimental evidence indicates that the likelihoo...

Among these parallelisms it is worthwhile to mention that both systems are essentially multihop and operate in a very noisy environment. For this reason the present paper reviews relevant results in the field of WSN with application to PLC based AMR systems and extracts lessons applicable to AMR and to PLC in general. Based on these lessons, this paper develops a theoretical model called the "star of chains model" with regularly spaced devices forming chains that connect to a concentrator station, which is useful to derive the capacity of a system and to provide some basic rules of the thumb for creating it. A specific and simple MAC layer protocol based on the WSN protocol known as "ripple control" is proposed to take the most out of the presented model. This protocol allows for good throughput while coping with the necessary retransmissions in noisy environments and with the necessary creation of periods of contention for the automatic registration of new nodes. The protocol may useful also for other applications in narrow band PLC as well as in broadband powerline communications (BPL). A simulation based on OPNET modeler has been developed to check the capacity calculations. The model and protocol presented are a first step that will be refined and extended in the future.

Polling protocols are widely used in PLC based AMR (automatic meter reading) systems but they present several drawbacks, as their inherent impossibility to automatically associate new meters to the system.
