Joel Lardner is a practicing Illustrator and also senior lecturer in illustration at Arts University Bournemouth. Joel has presented academic papers on subjects such as the origins of skateboarding iconography, the relationship between accidents, creativity and glitch practice. Joel’s current research focus has been a series of collaborative projects, with AUB colleague Paul Roberts, that explore, examine and expand the possibilities technology offers the curious Illustrator and visual storyteller.

CONFIA is the International Conference on Illustration and Animation at the Polytechnic Institute... more CONFIA is the International Conference on Illustration and Animation at the Polytechnic Institute of Cavado and Ave, organized by School of Design under the auspices of the Masters in Illustration and Animation.This is CONFIA's fourth conference after previous editions in Ofir, Porto and Braga.

It is intended to be a pivotal moment in the contemporary discussion of these areas, which have a long tradition and, at the same time, are pioneers in technological innovation. We intend to broadly explore the multidisciplinary space that includes illustration and the animated image, from the construction of the narrative to character development, from art theory to critical reflection on the objects that populate the market and the industry.

The accident has long been acknowledged as a catalyst for original thought and can offer new insi... more The accident has long been acknowledged as a catalyst for original thought and can offer new insights to the practitioner wishing to develop things which have never been contemplated or seen before. If we accept Virilio's (2007) description of the accident as "profane miracle", how can we instigate such mishaps, or even recognise their potential in the increasingly homogeneous digital landscape in which Illustrators find themselves? Is it even possible to override the restrictive mental parameters we are preconditioned to accept? This paper will aim to locate ways in which students of illustration can thrive by instigating accidents or disrupting the inhibitive characteristics of the technologies that surround us. I intend to seek out contemporary illustrators and investigate how they jump start their own creative process in order to develop a repertoire of strategies that reveal, or disclose, ways in which eureka moments can occur. It will investigate whether the D.I.Y mind-set (forever associated with punk attitudes and tastes) that encouraged experiments, risk and feedback, is still relevant to current illustration practices. It will point towards ways in which art educators can incite innovative visual thinking and nurture image makers that stand in opposition to algorithmical mediocrity; Illustrators match-fit for the 21 st Century.

"Old Ghosts": Observations on the 1980's Iconography that still Haunts Skateboarding

The purpose of this paper is to survey the visual inheritance and origins of skateboarding in ord... more The purpose of this paper is to survey the visual inheritance and origins of skateboarding in order to examine the pervasive attitude this cultural material still exerts. In particular it will assert that punk contamination of skateboarding lore helped engender a potent visual legacy that perfectly exemplified the visceral sensation of the act and in so doing disseminatied subcultural idealogy and customs in geographic locations devoid of radical ideas. However, following insights gathered at Pushing Boarders skateboard conference in Malmö, Sweden (2019) this very same transgressive, outlaw identity that skateboarders have long cherished was exposed as deeply problematic when we consider the ways in which such dogma impacts on acceptance and tolerance of less represented groups and communities of practitioners. Is this material now accountable for lingering attitudes out of step with the contemporary thought? This paper will investigate iconic totems from the nineteen-eighties; a critical time period in the development of skateboard culture, and look to understand their persistence and enduring ethnographic appeal. It will expand O'Connor's claim that "skateboarding must be understood, at least in part, as a visual culture" [1] and assert that skateboarding is a visual culture: a highly prized pictorial phenomena from which consumer brands can pluck subcultural capital and assert hip credentials.

This paper was motivated by an enthusiasm and curiosity to investigate the origins of the illustr... more This paper was motivated by an enthusiasm and curiosity to investigate the origins of the illustrated visual language associated with skateboarding. It will describe how myths associated with countercultures and individual creative expression nurtured a perceived sense of difference and otherness [1] and propagated distinct customs which endorsed anti-establishment attitudes and celebrated vulgarity. These conspicuous displays articulated the adrenalin thrills of the act itself and disseminated a potent visual code to juvenile male consumers eager to establish their rebellious, antisocial credentials. It will seek out the rich visual iconography associated with Californian youth movements brought to light by Woolfe in his essay The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby (1965) and attempt to establish a clear lineage between the legacy of Hot-rod customisation practices and the graphic heritage of skateboard culture best characterised by the output of Stecyk, Phillips and Johnson. Their prolific works for popular skateboard brands such as Powell-Peralta and Santa Cruz during the 1980's established the resilient visual inheritance which would eventually transform the perception of these counter cultural attitudes and motifs.
