Human head detection played an important role in applications such as video surveillance, percept... more Human head detection played an important role in applications such as video surveillance, perceptual user interface, face recognition and people tracking. In this system, an improved moving object detection algorithm was used to start the head detection and tracking process, which was based on the gradient and the color information. Firstly, we decreased the image size through a sampling method, then we detected skin regions over the entire image, and generated a searching space from them, after that an ellipse model was used to detect the head in the searching space, and the detection result was reflected to the original image, finally the final result above was being used to control the active camera. The evaluation of this system's performance was shown in the last part of the article. Experiment result shows that this system runs in real-time on a standard PC, being robust to changing background, partial occlusion, clutter, face scale variations, rotations in depth, and fast changes in subject or camera position.

This paper presents a system that is able to track multiple faces under varying pose (tilted and ... more This paper presents a system that is able to track multiple faces under varying pose (tilted and rotated) reliably in real-time. The system consists of two interactive modules. The first module performs detection of face subject to rotations. The second does online learning based face tracking. A mechanism of switching between the two modules is embedded into the system to automatically decide the best strategy for reliable tracking. The mechanism enables smooth transit between the detection and tracking module when one of them gives no results or unreliable results. Results demonstrate that the system can make reliable real-time tracking of multiple faces in complex background under out-of-plane rotation, up to 90 degree tilting, fast nonlinear motion, partial occlusion, large scale changes, and camera motion.

A new series of amphiphilically modified chitosan molecules with long alkyl chains as hydrophobic... more A new series of amphiphilically modified chitosan molecules with long alkyl chains as hydrophobic moieties and glycol groups as hydrophilic moieties (N-octyl-O-glycol chitosan, OGC) was synthesized for use as drug carriers. The chemical structure was characterized by Fourier transform infrared, (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance, and elemental analysis. OGC could easily self-assemble to form nanomicelles in an aqueous environment and exhibited a low critical micellar concentration of 5.3-32.5mg/L. The biocompatibility and low toxicity of OGC as excipient for the dosage forms aimed at i.v. administration were confirmed by hemolysis, acute toxicity and histopathological studies. Furthermore, the possibility of solubilizing paclitaxel (PTX), a water-insoluble antitumor drug, with OGC micelles was also explored. Based on the previously established method, we developed a better and stable animal model of type... more Based on the previously established method, we developed a better and stable animal model of type 2 diabetes mellitus by high-fat diet combined with multiple low-dose STZ injections. Meanwhile, this new model was used to evaluate the antidiabetic effect of berberine. Wistar male rats fed with regular chow for 4 weeks received vehicle (control groups), rats fed with high-fat diet for 4 weeks received different amounts of STZ once or twice by intraperitoneal injection (diabetic model groups), and diabetic rats were treated with berberine (100 mg/kg, berberine treatment group). Intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test and insulin tolerance test were carried out. Moreover, fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin, total cholesterol, and triglyceride were measured to evaluate the dynamic blood sugar and lipid metabolism.
