Poor performance in Kenya Certificate of Primary Education Examinations has often been attributed... more Poor performance in Kenya Certificate of Primary Education Examinations has often been attributed to a lack of parental participation in children's academics. The claim that parents are not supportive of their children, especially at home, therefore holds water as researchers have established that parent involvement with their children's homework could have an influence on their academic performance. This paper draws our attention to a study conducted to investigate the influence of parental involvement in school work on pupils' academic performance in public primary schools in Ainabkoi Sub County, Kenya. Joyce Epstein's framework of six types of parent involvement guided the study adopting the ex-post facto research design. Targeting 2404 Class 8 pupils and 61 class teachers in Ainabkoi Sub County, the authors drew a sample of 331 class eight pupils through stratified simple random sampling while census approach was employed to involve all the class teachers in the selected schools. The modes of data collection used were questionnaire and interview schedule whose validity was ensured through pilot study and reliability by test-retest technique. Quantitative data was then analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics in the form of percentages, means and chi-square, to test the study hypothesis. It was found out that parental participation in educational activities at home (X 2 =8.196; p=0.017) had a positive and significant influence on academic performance in public primary schools. Qualitative data was presented thematically. The study recommends that parents should provide their children with the required learning materials, such as supplementary reading complements to improve their academic performance.

While research has shown that parental involvement in primary schools is a significant contributor to the mental capacity, social and cognitive behaviour of students, public primary schools in Ainabkoi sub-county are yet to achieve. This paper draws our attention to a study that was conducted in the sub-county to investigate the relationship between parental involvement in pupils' educational activities at school and their academic performance in public primary schools. This study was guided by Type 3 Epstein's model of the six types of parent involvement as developed by Joyce Epstein. The study adopted ex-post facto research design and considered a target population of 2404 Class 8 pupils and 61 class teachers from which 331 Class eight pupils and 61 teachers were drawn using stratified random sampling and census approach, respectively. Questionnaire and interview schedule were used for data collection which was later analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics were analyzed in the form of percentages and means. Chi-square was used to test the hypotheses of the study. The found out that there was a positive and significant relationship between parental participation in educational activities at school(X 2 =22.619; p=0.001) and pupils' academic performance in Ainakboi Sub County. Qualitative data were analyzed using a thematic framework. The study concluded that parental involvement in educational activities in school was positively related to academic performance. The study recommended that the government should sensitize parents on involvement in their children's school activities through policy development to improve their academic performance.

Communication as portrayed in this paper can take the form of conferences/ meeting, telephoning writing notes, and face to face dialogue between parents and teachers. Founded on the theory of six types of parental involvement by Joyce Epstein's, the study adopted ex-post facto research design. A target population of 2404 Class 8 pupils and 61 class teachers was considered from which 331 class eight pupils were selected using stratified simple random sampling technique. Census approach was employed for the class teachers. Questionnaire and interview schedule were used to collect data. Quantitative data was then analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics in form of percentages, means and chi-square while qualitative data was analyzed using thematic framework. There was a positive and significant relationship between parent-teacher communication (X 2 =10.087; p=0.039) and academic performance. Parent-teacher communication is therefore a positive predictor of pupils' academic performance in primary schools. Such communication should be enhanced to make better the academic performance of pupils in the final examinations.

According to Oduwaye (2011) learning environment denotes the context in which learning takes place and encompasses all resources, human and material, programmes and opportunities for students to use them (resources) creatively and imaginatively while learning and to develop their potentials. Cohen (2015) in his view and opinion said that learning environment is the quality and character of school life that entails the many varied patterns of school life experiences that reflects on norms, values, goals, teaching, learning, interpersonal relationships, leadership practices and school's organizational structures in general. According to Nwadiani (2010), learning environment is an important concept that keeps evolving and that over time, concepts/environments changes from simple to become even more complex in structure and form. Therefore (changes) greatly influencing the individual's ways of acquiring skills, knowledge, attitudes and competencies. From these definitions (Oduwaye, 2011; Cohen, 2016; Nwadiani,2011), the study can broadly examine the concept of learning environment as a setting in which the learners comes into contact with, thereby influencing his or her behaviour as a whole.

Several NGOs with both local and international funding have been in the forefront in fighting poverty, and ignorance among farmers. Despite all these significant efforts made by NGOs in Kenya, no much research has been carried out to establish the effects of interventions by NGO on social economic development. The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of Self-reliance assistance on socio economic development in Soy Sub County, Kenya. The study was based on Social Exchange Theory developed by George C. Homans in between 1910-1989.a s the main theory. The study adopted a cross sectional research design. The target population for this study was 1,580 registered farmers with a sample size of 158 respondents based on Mugenda and Mugenda (2003), a sample size of 10% of the total population is considered adequate. Simple random sampling was used to select the respondents. Primary data was collected in the study for analysis. The study relied on a structured questionnaire as the main tool for data collection. The data obtained from the study was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. In descriptive statistics the study used frequencies, mean and standard deviation while in inferential statistics the study Anova and Pearson moment correlation. The findings indicated that self-reliance assistance r=0.896 and the pvalue is .000 had positive high correlation to farmers' socioeconomic development in Soy Sub County, therefore it was concluded that self-reliance assistance positively and significantly influence farmers' socioeconomic development in Soy Sub County. The study recommended that Government, private sector and NGOs should collaborate to establish a mechanism for a better and efficient approach to providing skilled capacity, need to adopt prudent resource management and develop organization culture that prudently utilizes resources for the optimum good of the society and the NGOs can train community members for services extension purposes. The trained members can be used to reach the other community members who may not have the benefit of accessing the offices and any other important information.

Leadership styles affect the institution both positively and negatively in terms of organizational processes, structures patterns of interaction, beliefs, attitudes and job behaviors (Koech and Namusonge, 2012). Head teachers' leadership styles have been observed as being fundamental to success of institution. They help in determining performance of both teachers and learners. A professionally developed teacher ensures effective and quality education delivery. Okoroji and Hannington (2011) in their study noted that the teacher is the boss, director, manager administrator and organizer. He/she enjoys relatively higher degree of privacy and autonomy. Ummoh (2013) noted that leadership styles have a significant impact on teacher performance, learner performance and even how the Board of Management perform. The most observable leadership styles in Kenyan schools are autocratic, democratic and transformational styles. Autocratic leadership is a domineering style where the leader alone takes decision for others to implement without consultation, very little communication and the leader mostly uses threats and punishment. Psychologists believe this style stems from fear and feeling of insecurity Kimengini (2013). Democratic leadership style is grounded on the fact that the success of an organization is the responsibility of all workers even though the leader has the primary role of guiding the rest of the group in arriving at collective decisions thus encouraging, delegating, coaching, accepting responsibility and recognition of the ability and potential of others Andende (2016). A research by Koech and Namusonge (2012) concluded that head teachers who practiced democratic leadership had their teachers performing well since they were involved in the whole process of running the school by being involved in decision making and delegation. Transformational leadership depicts a situation where the leader works with teams to identify needed change, creates a vision to guide the change through inspiration and executing the change in tandem with committed members of the group. Basically, the leader is flexible, open-minded, sensitive to other people's needs encourages participation, sharing, decision-making and is highly tolerant of diversity(Anderson,2012). Teacher performance on the other hand could be described in various ways. Robert and Tim (2008) defined teacher performance as the act of accomplishing or executing different tasks or duties at a particular period in the school system achieving educational goals. The teachers' performance is gauged through annual report of his or her activities in terms of performance in teaching, adequate preparation of professional documents (schemes of work, lesson plans, progressive records, records of work) mastery of subject matter, competence teachers' commitment to job and

Introduction Unembellished forest disturbances such as those by logging, wildfires and windstorms... more Introduction Unembellished forest disturbances such as those by logging, wildfires and windstorms are part of the natural dynamics of forest ecosystems across the world (Banerjee & Madhurima, 2013), yet, World Bank (2016) estimates that 1.3 billion people globally depend directly on forests for livelihood and another 800 million people live in and/or near forests, relying on forest resources for their survival. Moreover, 350 million people who live adjacent to dense forests depend on them for subsistence and income (Chao, 2012). In a rapid modernizing and resource-deficit environment, managing forests successfully, while at the same time sustaining forest-dependent livelihoods, is critical (Balmford & Bond, 2015). Crouzeilles et al. (2017) explicate that identifying and adopting management strategies that promote regeneration and maintain ecosystem functions of post-disturbance forests, whether through proactive interventions is paramount. However, logging has been a major barrier to forest management practices in many countries. In this study, logging is the process of felling and extracting timber from forests. Until after World War II, logging operations in tropical forests were for the most part mechanized, relying largely on human and animal power. Some of the early studies and interventions on forest management of tropical forests emphasized the significance of careful logging to protect future crop trees and support people's livelihoods effectively (Dawkins and Philip, 1998). Vedeld et al. (2004) found that forest products contribute between 20% and 40% of total income of households in forest areas, and that poor households tend to be disproportionately dependent on forest resources. In countries such as Indonesia, timber production poses significant threats to forest ecosystems in tropical regions (Lawson et al. 2014). For instance, between 2000 and 2010 1.8 Mha of forests (12.8%) of all deforestation during that time period were lost within commercial logging concessions in Indonesia. In Pakistan, there is rapid degradation of the ozone layer, soil resources, as well as air and water pollution and affect human well-being, especially on their socioeconomic status (Alam, 2010). The natural resources have depleted remarkably resulting from accelerated pace of economic and social transformation (Nkonya et al. 2011). According to Jouanjean et al. (2014) socioeconomic status of rural populations are increasingly constrained by environmental

Reports about the educational and occupational achievement of children with learning disabilities... more Reports about the educational and occupational achievement of children with learning disabilities (LD) in adulthood have been inconsistent, ranging from optimistic to negative. Generally, studies that show good outcome have tended to base their conclusions on subjects from high socioeconomic backgrounds. In the present study, data were extracted from a longitudinal study (Spreen, 1981) on 226 subjects with learning disabilities in order to determine the nature and extent of the relationship between parents' educational level and socioeconomic status (SES), and the occupational and academic outcome of children with LD. A significant correlation was found between the parent and subject variables, accounting for 28% of the variance. Fathers' SES was the major contributing parent variable. The relationship held across groups of children with LD (children with hard and soft neurological signs, and no neurological findings) and controls. The contribution of SES to selected outcome...
