Values xi are ordered non-decreasingly. We analyse the cumulative distribution, zi = ∑i'=1,...,ixi. The sequence zi is convex. We want to divide the distribution of zi into subsets of i, with the shape of the distribution {zi} possibly well approximated by the segments of the straight line, determined for the subsets, forming a piecewise linear contour, the number of segments being possibly small. This corresponds to the frequently used categorisations for similar distributions (e.g., “developed”, “developing”,... countries). For such categorisations, usually no formal methods are applied but “substantive” prerequisites, or the methods applied are limited to establishing quantiles of the distribution, without considering its shape and the objective premises for determination of a different number of segments, includ...

Given the limitations of the offi cial statistics, characterised in the paper, and often leading to statistical artefacts, the analysis attempts to verify certain simple hypotheses, which can be forwarded on the basis of these statistics. Some simple models and relations are identifi ed for the entire population of the rural municipalities in Poland and for its signifi cant sub-populations. This analysis constitutes also a preliminary step towards identifi cation of regional differentiation with respect to the phenomena considered. The primary purpose of the analysis, whose initial stages are presented here, is to identify the development paths of rural municipalities in order to be able to assess the quality (degree of balance or sustainability) of their development with respect to the paths identifi ed.

The report presents the results from the analysis of the population of Polish rural municipalitie... more The report presents the results from the analysis of the population of Polish rural municipalities. The analysis was related to broadly conceived “sustained development”. An essential aspect was also associated with “comparison” (yielding “development quality”), necessitating establishment of “types” (“development types” or “paths”), within which comparison would be justified. A number of techniques were used in the study, ranging from correlation analysis, through simple linear regression and factor analysis down to cluster analysis. Based on the results from application of these techniques, a series of initial hypotheses, concerning the classification of Polish rural municipalities, could be verified. The analyses, referring to a large extent to the spatial aspect of the population of Polish rural municipalities, enabled also visual verification of the hypotheses mentioned. Likewise, the types established refer to a large extent to the spatial position of the municipalities and the structures thereof. Given the characteristics of the types, their validity for policy making in terms of potential future developments and their consequences, could also be established. This refers in a special manner to the processes, leading to excess congestion and disorderly urbanisation, to spatial segregation, as well as marginalisation and socio-economic collapse. Of particular importance is the capacity of assessing, in addition to the spatial aspect, the current and potential dimensions of these
