D... more Studying the concept of the vortex is an essential tool in the comprehension of fluid dynamics. Despite this, it is still very difficult to find a universal definition of a vortex. Several methods of detection and characterization of vortex structures has been developed and performed. Specifically tailored for PIV data, they present an important topic in modern experimental fluid mechanics. In fact, the performance of the method is related to its effectiveness in the velocity data analysis and to successfully detect and locate the vortices as well as calculate the characteristic vortex parameters. In the present study, we explore the efficiency of different vortex detection algorithms such as the vorticity ω, Γ2 and Q criteria by studying the vortices structures in the wake of a confined square obstacle. Two techniques are used: Visualization using the Kalliroscope and Electro-diffusion method using electrochemical probes. The fluid is confined between concentric cylinders. It is constituted by an electrochemical solution seeding with 2% of a rheoscopic liquid AQ-1000 (Kalliroscope Corp., U.S.A.). The rheoscopic liquid contains small particles reflecting light in dependence on their orientation imposed by the flow direction. The reflected light intensity of Kalliroscope flakes allows a qualitative study of the flow. This has motivated the present paper, which describes the implementation of a passive scalar transport equation into a hybrid spectral/finite-element code. Direct numerical simulations (DNS) and large eddy simulation (LES) were performed to study the effects of gravitational and centrifugal potentials on the stability of incom-pressible Taylor-Couette flow. La rfsolution numfrique du problfme a 6t6 faite par la mfthode des difffrences finies en utilisant les hypoth6ses de la couche limite. Deux types de conditions aux limites ont 6t6 consid6rfs h l'entrfe de l'espace annulaire : vitesse axiale uniforme et vitesse axiale correspondant celle en sortie d'un milieu poreux, de manifre ~ obfir aux conditions expfrimentales. Les profils de vitesse ont ~t6 d&ermin~s par vflocimftrie laser ~ difffrentes distances de l'entrfe et pour diff~rentes valeurs du nombre de Reynolds. Les gradients pariftaux de vitesse et les coefficients locaux de transfert de matifre ont 6t6 obtenus sur des microflectrodes en mettant en oeuvre une mfthode polarographique. Les prfdictions numfriques sont en bon accord avec les rfsultats expfrimentaux.

Couette-Taylor-Poiseuille flow CTPF consists on the superposition of Couette-Taylor flow to an ax... more Couette-Taylor-Poiseuille flow CTPF consists on the superposition of Couette-Taylor flow to an axial flow. The CTPF flow hydrodynamics studies remain rather qualitative or numerical or are restricted to relatively low Taylor and/or axial Reynolds numbers. For more comprehensive and control of CTPF, especially for relatively high Taylor numbers and high axial Reynolds numbers, we investigated experimentally CTF with and without an axial flow, using the electro-diffusion ED method. This technique requires the use of Electro-Diffusion ED probe which allows the determination of the local mass transfer rate from the Limiting Diffusion current measurement delivered by the ED probe while it is polarized by a polarization voltage. From the local mass transfer (the Sherwood number), we determined the wall shear rate using different approaches. Analysis of Gas-Liquid Intermittent Flow Sub-Regimes by Pressure Drop Signal Fluctuations

This work is devoted to pressure drop signals analysis to characterize the sub-regimes of intermi... more This work is devoted to pressure drop signals analysis to characterize the sub-regimes of intermittent flows. Experiments were carried out using air-water mixture in a horizontal 30 mm ID pipe. The sub-regimes observed are classified as Plug flow, Less Aerated Slug flow (LAS flow) and Highly Aerated Slug flow (HAS flow). Thus, a flow sub-regime map, based on the gas and liquid superficial velocities, is proposed. At first, the visual observation of the pressure drop signals showed peaks and a relatively constant pressure drop region. Furthermore, a gas and liquid superficial velocity surge induces an increase of the values of the pressure drop standard deviations. The gathered frictional pressure drop values are analysed using the Lockhart-Martinelli method. The best results are obtained for a coefficient C = 10. Finally, the comparison between the measured slug frequencies with some existing models showed that the correlations of Fossa et al. (2003) and Wang et al. (2007) predict well the experimental results.

In this paper we present the reactive extrusion process to extract the lipids from by-products of... more In this paper we present the reactive extrusion process to extract the lipids from by-products of fish. The study focuses on the technical feasibility of using these purified lipids as an additive (between 5 and 40% dilution) in a diesel fuel for use in an engine.The parameters of extrusion process were optimised in order to extract the most percentage of oil and the results of lipids extraction were compared with other techniques like batch process. The physico-chemical characteristics (viscosity, density, calorific value, acidity index) of extracted and transesterified oil are compared with diesel characteristics. Further tests will concern the production of mixtures of the obtained oil and the diesel oil at different dilutions.

This study aims to investigate the bio-refinery process through an enzyme-assisted extraction (EA... more This study aims to investigate the bio-refinery process through an enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE) on freeze-dried and fresh macroalgae Gracilaria gracilis for the release of water-soluble components (R-phycoerythrin, proteins, and sugar). Three enzymes, cellulase, protease, and enzyme cocktail (mixture of cellulase and protease), were applied in the study. Results showed that freeze-dried biomass yielded the highest target components in the presence of enzyme cocktail while a single enzyme was better with fresh biomass, either protease for the release of R-PE and protein or cellulase for sugar. The extraction of protein and sugar was improved by 43% and 57%, respectively, from fresh biomass compared to dried biomass. The difference of biomass status was shown to affect the required enzyme and recovery yield during the extraction process. The objective of this paper is to study the potential phoenicicol biomass sub-product evaluation ... more The objective of this paper is to study the potential phoenicicol biomass sub-product evaluation in the Guerrara Oasis ecosystem. The goal to carry out this study is to determine different possibilities of energy recovery resource. The obtained experimental results provide an identification of main phenocicol sub-products, which are available and not fully recovered; named: kernaf, addaf, saqqas, khallab, arjoun, lif and djerid, as well as a quantitative assessment taking into consideration the biodiversity. The concluded results averred an annual biomass potential quantity, estimated at about 11 366 tons, generated by 218 467 date palm trees in Guerrara oasis. The recorded results following this study were encouraged for an eventual energetic valorization, but it must be improved through biomass energy evaluation and extensive structural element analysis, as (C, O, H, N, S).

Experimental Investigations on Oscillatory Couette-Taylor Flow Wall Shear Stress Behaviour Using Electrochemical Technique: High Modulation Effect

In the simplest and original case of study of the Taylor-Couette TC problems, the fluid is contai... more In the simplest and original case of study of the Taylor-Couette TC problems, the fluid is contained between a fixed outer cylinder and a concentric inner cylinder which rotates at constant angular velocity. Much of the works done has been concerned on steady rotating cylinder(s) i.e. rotating cylinders with constant velocity and the various transitions that take place as the cylinder(s) velocity (ies) is (are) steadily increased. On this work, we concentrated our attention in the case in which the inner cylinder velocity is not constant, but oscillates harmonically (in time) clockwise and counterclockwise while the outer cylinder is maintained fixed. Our aim is to attempt to answer the question if the modulation makes the flow more or less stable with respect to the vortices apparition than in the steady case and if there are any reversing or non reversing flows apparition. If the modulation amplitude is large enough to destabilize the circular Couette flow, two classes of axisymmetric Taylor vortex flow are possible: reversing Taylor Vortex Flow (RTVF) and Non-Reversing Taylor Vortex Flow (NRTVF). Our work presents an experimental investigation of the effect of oscillatory Couette-Taylor flow on the instantaneous and local mass transfer and wall shear rates evolutions, i.e. the impact of vortices at wall; and the detection of any RTVF and/or NRTVF apparition. The vortices may manifest themselves by the presence of timeoscillations of mass transfer and wall shear rates; this generally corresponds to an instability apparition even for steady rotating cylinder. On laminar CT flow, the time-evolution of wall shear rate is linear. It can be presented as a linear function of the angular velocity. For a mean Taylor number corresponding to a laminar Couette flow, a modulation frequency F = 0.1 Hz and an amplitude respectively β = 0.53 andβ = 1.08 are sufficient to destabilize the laminar CT flow, Taylor vortices appear. Comparing to a steady rotational velocity case, oscillatory flow accelerates the instability apparition, i.e. the mean critical Taylor number corresponds to the transition is smaller than that of the steady rotational case. The vortices direction can be deduced from the sign of the instantaneous wall shear rate time evolution.
