Akin other countries in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), Nigeria is yet to leverage on and fully maximize the potentialities offered by satellite remote sensing in monitoring and assessment of biophysical and ecological change indicators including greenhouse gases. This study was undertaken with the prime motivation of ascertaining the variations of greenhouse gases concentrations in Delta State, Nigeria as well as the correlation between in-situ measurement and satellite remote sensing observation. Datasets comprising carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) and were sourced from the archive of the European Space Agency and field sampling using Aeroqual S500 ambient air analyser. Descriptive statistics, independent Samples t-Test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), Tukey HSD test of multiple comparisons and...

Pollution in swimming pools is therefore, not uncommon and it is a serious public health issue both at the global, regional, national and local levels. This study focused on application of water quality index in assessment of swimming pools water quality in hotels in emerging Africa littoral metropolis of Warri, Delta State, Nigeria. It used stratified random sampling technique to select five hotels with swimming pool in Warri for assessment. Temperature, pH, turbidity, free (residual) chlorine, total heterotrophic bacteria, total heterotrophic fungi, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus tested in the laboratory using scientific method of sampling. Water quality index (WQI) was computed using Weighted Arithmetic Water Quality Index (WAWQI) to evaluate in general, the quality of wat...

Gas flaring has not only contributed to poor environmental quality and pollution but play remarkable role in micro-climate modification. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of gas flaring on air quality of Ologbo flow station, Edo state. Data was collected for air within defined distances from the flaring point in accordance with standard procedure. A 4 km distance from the flare facility was buffered. Sampling sites 1, 2, and 3 are within the vicinity of the flare facility, while the control point (Evbuarhue) is located 30 km from the fence of the flare facility. Air Quality measurements were done for carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), methane CH4 and ammonia (NH3) using toxic gas monitors meter; toxic EEX 79 IICT3-T4 and CE89/336/EEC. The Ambient Air Quality and humidity were analyzed in situ using the standards a...

A shortfall in quantity and quality of water in the university community and surrounding hostels normally exposes students to various degrees of water stress and other vulnerabilities with serious implications on personal sanitation and hygiene. This paper evaluates drinking water pollution in three private hostels around the

This study investigates the pattern and influence of gully erosion in Etim Umana axis of Eniong Offot, Uyo in Akwa Ibom State with emphasis on geospatial assessment of land use/cover, elevation, and flow accumulation. Map analyses of land use/land cover reveals that urbanization/population growth representing 41.6 percent, scattered cultivation representing 22 percent, and paved surface representing 16.7 percent coupled with high rainfall which together accounted for a total of 80.3 percent of the outstanding drivers of gully migration and expansion in Etim Umana site while secondary vegetation and bared ground accounted for 19.7 percent in the Original Research Article

It exposes humanity and many socio-ecological systems to various levels of risks. In Nigeria, extreme rainfall events and poor drainage system have caused inundation of several settlements to flooding. To contain the disaster, risk mapping were among the measures recommended. Aims: The aim of this paper is to highlight flood risk zones (FRZ) in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area (LGA), Edo State, Nigeria. Methodology: Flood risk (FR) was mapped using hazards and vulnerability and implemented using geographic information system (GIS)-based multi-criteria analysis analytic hierarchy process (MCA-AHP) framework by incorporating seven environmental and two socio-economic factors. Elevation, flow accumulation, soil water index of wettest quarter, normalized difference vegetation index, rainfall of wettest quarter, runoff of wettest quarter and distance from rivers constituted the hazard c...
