Palabras clave: nombres personales africanos, funciones socioculturales de los nombres personales, traducción de nombres personales In this paper, we study the sociocultural and ethnopragmatic significance of African names as used by the Yoruba and Izon of Nigeria and the Akan of Ghana. From the perspective of linguistic anthropology, we show the non-arbitrary nature of these names and demonstrate the need to translate them, particularly in fictional texts, so that their significance may be preserved.

Invectives are a major aspect of language that have been greatly neglected in intellectual discourse. Motivated by the paucity of academic literature and other stereotypes in human communication, the thrust of this work is to discuss the socio-cultural factors embedded in the two cultures in their approach to invectives. The study examines a comparative taxonomy of invectives in isiZulu and Yoruba languages from a socio-semiotic perspective. Drawing examples from the two languages, the study explores instances of semiotic analysis that are created by the assumption that signs, utterances and messages are situated within the context of social relations and processes. The research tools included observation, interviews, and archival materials. The study indicates that invectives are context and culture-dependent. The study reveals striking similarities and differences in the invective-related discourses of isiZulu and Yoruba.

Cependant, alor...

The analysis provided is based on names collected randomly within the isiZulu speaking community. The objective of this paper is to discuss hypocoristics in isiZulu, one of the eleven official languages of South Africa which is also spoken in slightly different forms in other countries of the sub southern African region. An expressive form of a child language that sometimes renders the personal name unrecognisable. A nickname
