Cooperative works of different disciplines and research areas, such as environmental psychology, social psychology, community psychology, home environment studies, urban planning and architecture have developed an understanding of relationships between quality and residential spaces. In this study an attempt has been made to analyze quality issues in housing environments by providing a general review related to quality housing research and by establishing a model that can be used to evaluate the concept of quality in housing. Focusing on a specific housing settlement as a case study, the goal here is to open a debate based on design concepts and their social and spatial consequences in architecture and to provide important data for future housing projects in Turkey. In the scope of the work, the Belerko Housing Settlement in the City of Trabzon has been selected as a research area. Aim of the study is to develop an understanding of the social, psychological and the physical characteristics that contribute to spatial quality in this specific housing environment.

Academic capitalism is an outcome of the interplay between neoliberalism, globalisation, markets ... more Academic capitalism is an outcome of the interplay between neoliberalism, globalisation, markets and universities (Slaughter and Leslie, 1997; 2001). Universities have embraced the commercialisation of knowledge, technology transfer and research funding as well as introducing performance and audit practices (Slaughter and Rhoades, 2000; 2004). Academic capitalism has become internalised as a regulatory mechanism by academics who attempt to accumulate academic capital (Morley, 2014). Universities are traditionally gendered organisations, reflecting the societal gender order. Despite fears regarding the feminisation of the academy, Thornton (2013, p. 128) argues that the embrace of academic capitalism is contributing to its re-masculinisation and exercises an incidental gender effect. Practicing is the means by which the gender order is constituted at work (Martin 2003, p. 354). Three practices in which academics engage are examined as exemplars of the way academics increase their academic capital stock in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) faculties in four European universities, in Bulgaria, Denmark, Ireland and Turkey. These practices tend to be more achievable and likely to be engaged in by men, thus, career practices are the mechanism through which the gender effect of academic capitalism is achieved, academic capitalism perpetuated and the gender order maintained in STEM in academia (200 words).

The egress problems within buildings are evaluated by means of analytical or simulation models. This paper introduces a simulation model which can be used to predict the emptying time and to spot the

Space syntax is an approach developed for analysing those spatial configurations. This study attempts to formulate the various spatial patterns that have been formed through the history of Trabzon, by means of Space Syntax techniques in a concrete way. It is suggested that the analysis techniques of Space Syntax, supported by a wide range of knowledge, have contributed greatly in the formulation of spatial models in concrete form, further intuition, and can be accepted as a useful tool for defining similarities and differences between different home environments.

Initially these higher learning institutions were affiliated with the most important mosques and their curriculum consisted of Muslim law and study, and interpretation of the Koran. Their programs were later expanded to include subjects like logic, mathematics and geometry. This tradition did not evolve into a secular positive science education until the eighteenth century.

There is a strong need for different types of learning to widen the students learning processes. To be able to realise this objective, we believe, it is so important to organize suitable environments for young designers to learn from their peers and exchange their ideas. student architectural design competitions can be perceived as flexible, learner-centered environments where students have more effective learning opportunities. With this point of view, Association for Architectural Education (ArchED) started to organize a student projects competition, Student Awards for Architectural Education, since the year 2002. The main focus of the paper is to analyse and evaluate this competition within the framework of architectural education based on different aspects and indicators of learning processes.

Many cities in the developing world suffer from regional imbalance. Migration from rural to urban areas has ended up with huge population growth in urban areas and eventually informal housing areas, or squatter settlements, have become a fact of life. In the case of Turkey, the squatter settlements spread across the face of the country's urban areas while initially developed to meet the housing needs of the mushrooming population they have become a vehicle for illicit profit taking. So, despite the fact that the squatter neighborhoods have increased the amount of housing available, they have also developed into tools for land speculation, thus acting as a barrier to the development of viable alternatives. Today, squatter settlements in Turkey as in developing countries reflect social, economical and environmental problems with their changing identities. In this process they must be seen as a formation which should be discussed by architects, planners, engineers, psychologist, economists or politicians, and some solutions, projects must be developed. This paper concentrated on discussion for solutions to informal housing in Turkey. The main objectives are to examine possible solutions and to reach valuable results in the scope of the findings. Initially squatter settlements in Turkey are described in general terms. Then legal and planning dimensions which have been implemented since 1950 are discussed. Among the planning measures that would be utilized following the passing of suitable laws are those which can be discussed under the headings of upgrading, prevention, and elimination. In relation to this approaches examples from Turkey and from other developing countries have been cited. The second section of this work includes a discussion of the applied research studies presented in "Housing for the Urban Poor" workshops held within the framework of the Med Campus Housing Network. This section briefly summarize the descriptions of the PYnar Squatter Settlement and the solutions suggested for the problems identified at the settlement. The last section uses the experimental work of the study to arrive at nation-wide level solutions for the squatter problem in Turkey.

It is suggested that this advantage has been obscured by combining sponsorship and mentoring. The research asks: Are men or women most likely to be mentored? Is it possible to distinguish between mentoring and sponsorship? Is there gender variation in either or both of these depending on the sourcewhether from the academic supervisor, line manager or other senior academics. This qualitative study draws on interview data from 106 respondents (57 men and 48 women) at junior, middle and senior levels, in four universities: one each in Bulgaria, Denmark, Ireland and Turkey. It shows that both men and women received mentoring from their PhD supervisor, albeit with slightly different reported nuances. Men were more likely than women to receive sponsorship in that relationship. Both men and women received sponsorship from the Head of Department, whose wider responsibilities may have reduced homophily. Men were more likely than women to receive sponsorship and mentoring from senior men, with most women indicating a lack of access to such senior academics. By distinguishing between mentoring and sponsorship, this article contributes to our understanding of the way male dominance in STEM is perpetuated and suggests the source of men's invisible advantage in STEM.

since 2000. Educational institutions have attempted to carry out research projects to understand different aspects of these themes and created platforms to introduce and share new ideas and knowledge in Turkey. Since 1949, the ITU Faculty of Architecture has maintained a tradition of excellence and leadership in architectural education and research,
especially regarding housing in Turkey. The aim of this study is to provide a database on housing research at PhD level at ITU Faculty of Architecture and to map and visualise the research repertoire of the institution. It is believed that the final figures will be valuable in evaluating the potential of the institution and in revealing inadequate fields in which research must be carried out by offering alternative perspectives for future studies on housing in Turkey.
