In order to investigate the mechanism by which o,p&am... more In order to investigate the mechanism by which o,p'-DDT disrupts endocrine functioning of Nile tilapia in vivo, the estrogenicity of o,p'-DDT was investigated in conjunction with 17beta-estradiol (E2) and tamoxifen. Mature, male tilapia were treated intraperitoneally with o,p'-DDT (60 mg/kg, one dose) or E2 (5 mg/kg, four doses) in the presence or absence of tamoxifen (5 mg/kg, six doses) for 12 days and then plasma vitellogenin (Vtg) (measured as alkaline-labile phosphorous), E2, and testosterone (T) were measured. Vtg levels were increased dramatically by E2 (1,744 +/- 171 microg/ml) and moderately by o,p'-DDT (82 +/- 15 microg/ml) compared with controls (23 +/- 3.5 microg/ml). Tamoxifen alone had no effect on Vtg production, but inhibited both E2 and o,p'-DDT stimulated vitellogenesis. T levels were reduced with E2 administration (1,688 +/- 383 pg/ml) and declined further with the combined treatment of E2 and tamoxifen (281 +/- 70 pg/ml), compared with controls (6,558 +/- 1,438 pg/ml). Tamoxifen or o,p'-DDT alone did not affect T levels, but their combined treatment did (2,069 +/- 647 pg/ml). The results of this study suggest that o,p'-DDT is weakly estrogenic in male tilapia, and that this activity may be mediated through the estrogen receptor.

The impact from oil production activities on the benthic community structure and shrimp (Farfantepenaeus duorarum and Litopenaeus setiferus) biochemical markers were studied in the Gulf of Mexico, which is heavily contaminated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals. Shrimp were collected from a control area and from an area close to oil production platforms during October and November 2002. There was no spatial difference in exposure and response probably because shrimp migrate, as results did not show significant differences in cytochrome P4501A (as measured by ethoxycoumarin O-deethylase (ECOD) metabolism) between the two sites. In October, shrimp ECOD activities were higher and statistically different from those measured in the samples taken in November. As for ECOD activities, with the concentration of vitellogenin as another biomarker, there were no differences between the shrimp collected from the control area and the shrimp collected on the oil production platforms. In this case the concentrations were higher in shrimp collected in November vs. shrimp collected in October. However, there are significant correlations between contaminants and responses (biomarkers), indicating an effect of pollution. One of the most important considerations brought up by this kind of study is that, although the majority of groups studying the effects of endocrine disruption have focused almost exclusively on human health or vertebrate wildlife-related issues, it is necessary to increase research focused on understanding the function of hormones in invertebrate species exposed in the field to different kinds of pollutants.
Two groups of Avicennia germinans plants with differences in the radical architecture were expose... more Two groups of Avicennia germinans plants with differences in the radical architecture were exposed under hydroponic conditions to 95 ppm of cadmium (Cd) for a period of 24 h. Later, Cd concentration in roots, stems and leaves was determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Our results showed that, for both groups of plants, the roots accumulated higher concentration of Cd as compared to stems and leaves, though, the plants of group B displayed enhanced radical architecture, better growth performance, and lower Cd concentration as compared to plants of group A. In contrast, low values of leaves/roots Cd transportation index, and bioaccumulation factor were found in plants of group B. These results suggest that the higher radical architecture developed in plants of group B might better adjust the uptake of Cd as a result of an integrated network of multiple response processes for instances, production of organic acids, antioxidative replay, cell-wall lignification and/or suberization. Further studies will be focused in understanding the role of the radical system in mangrove plants with the rhizosphere activation and root adsorption to soil Cd under natural conditions.
Experimental results showed that the gill monogenean Cichlidogyrus sclerosus and its host, the Ni... more Experimental results showed that the gill monogenean Cichlidogyrus sclerosus and its host, the Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, exhibited significant numerical and physiological responses after exposure to sediments polluted with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls, and heavy metals in comparison with control fishes. After 15 days of exposure, C. sclerosus abundance significantly increased in treatments with low to fairly high sediment pollutant concentrations, but declined at high sediment pollutant concentrations. Hypertrophy and hyperplasia in secondary gill lamellae and the spleen melanomacrophage centers were significantly higher at extremely high sediment pollutant concentrations compared with the controls. Spleen lymphocyte and monocyte counts were significantly lower at extremely high sediment pollutant concentrations and were significantly correlated with high fluorescent aromatic compound concentrations measured as PAH exposure indicators. A multivariate redundancy analysis showed significant statistical association between sediment pollutant concentration, C. sclerosus abundance, and tilapia physiological variables. The polluted sediments negatively affected monogenean abundance and induced immunosuppression in hosts, consequently increasing histological damage in hosts and allowing persistent C. sclerosus infection. This study documents evidence suggesting that C. sclerosus and its host are indeed excellent models to test environmental quality in tropical freshwater ecosystems.
White grunt (Haemulon plumieri) has been proposed by the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System (MBRS) ... more White grunt (Haemulon plumieri) has been proposed by the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System (MBRS) Synoptic Monitoring Program as a bioindicator species. It is in this sense that the present study has a main goal to evaluate this organism's suitability as an indicator species. Individuals were captured during three seasons at the port of Sisal, Yucatan, Mexico which is located in an area that is considered to be weakly impacted by human activities such as agriculture or industry. Both cholinesterase (ChE) and carboxylesterase (CbE) activities were measured in brain, muscle, liver and eye of sampled individuals. Results indicated that ChE and CbE activities were greatest in the brain (256.3 ± 43) and in the liver (191 ± 21), respectively. Furthermore, ChEs detected in brain, liver and muscle were characterized, and results suggested that the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) type was more abundant relative to pseudocholinesterase (BChE) which was rare. In addition, K(m) and V(max) and IC(50) values were calculated from the Michaelis-Menten equation. Finally, an additional experiment in vitro showed a significant decrease in both ChE and CbE activities when different tissues were exposed to model xenobiotics, such as benzo[a]pyrene and Chlorpyrifos. In conclusion, findings from this study confirm the potential suitability of H. plumieri as an organic pollution bioindicator species, and thus of practical use for environmental biomonitoring purposes.

Reserve regulations at El Palmar State Reserve, Yucatan, Mexico, prohibit the use of lead (Pb) sh... more Reserve regulations at El Palmar State Reserve, Yucatan, Mexico, prohibit the use of lead (Pb) shot, but hunters continue to use it, and no enforcement is implemented. Pb was quantified in sediments and in blue-winged teal Anas discors. No shot pellets were found in the sediment samples, nor were differences in sediment Pb concentrations observed within the reserve between popular hunting sites and those no longer used for hunting. However, there were differences between the hunting sites and sediments from an adjacent area where hunting is prohibited. Average Pb concentrations were highest at hunting entrances (15.69 ± 18.69 mg/kg) and lowest at decoy locations (5.24 ± 4.84 mg/kg). These averages are lower than the lowest effects level (31 mg/kg), although 10 samples exceeded this level. Pb-shot prevalence in gizzards was 4.88 % (n = 41). Pb levels exceeded 5.0 mg/kg dry weight in one or more of the tested tissues (liver, gizzard, and bone) in 14 (34.14 %; 7 female, 7 male; 11 adult, 3 juvenile) of the total birds. Bird weight, sex, and age had no effect on Pb concentration. Hunting using Pb shot in the reserve clearly affects Pb levels in sediments and in A. discors that winter there.

The suitability of using helminth communities as bioindicators of environmental quality of the Yu... more The suitability of using helminth communities as bioindicators of environmental quality of the Yucatan coastal lagoons status was tested on the checkered puffer (Spheroides testudineus) in four coastal lagoons along the Yucatan coast. The concentration of chemical pollutants in sediments, water quality parameters, helminth infracommunity characteristics, as well as fish physiological biomarkers, including EROD (7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase) and catalase activities, were measured. Results from sediment analyses demonstrated the presence of hydrocarbons, organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls at varying concentrations, some of which exceeded the Probability Effect Level (PEL). Significant negative associations among organochlorine pesticides, infracommunity characteristics and fish physiological responses were observed in most of the lagoons. Results suggest that EROD activity and parasite infracommunity characteristics could be useful tools to evaluate the effects of chemical pollutants on the fish host and in the environment. Importantly, certain parasites appear to influence biomarker measurements, indicating that parasites should be considered in ecotoxicological studies.

The Yangtze River Delta (YRD) has been quickly industrialized and urbanized. Passive air sampling... more The Yangtze River Delta (YRD) has been quickly industrialized and urbanized. Passive air sampling of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was carried out in the YRD in 2010-2011 to investigate their spatiotemporal distributions and estimate the risk of cancer from their inhalation. Annual concentrations were 151, 168, 18.8, 110, 17.9, and 35.0 pg m(-3) for HCB, ∑DDTs, ∑HCHs, ∑chlordane, mirex, and PCBs, respectively. The highest OCP and PCB concentrations were generally detected in the autumn and winter. The average concentrations of OCPs and PCBs for the different site groups followed the order urban ≈ urban-rural transition > rural. The lifetime excess cancer risks from the inhalation of OCPs and PCBs were <1.0 × 10(-6). The predicted cancer cases per lifetime associated with the inhalation of OCPs and PCBs are 12, 7, and 4 per ten thousand people for urban, urban-rural transition, and rural areas, respectively.
Solubility measurements of naphthalene in seawater of different salinities have been determined b... more Solubility measurements of naphthalene in seawater of different salinities have been determined by the Generator Column Method in the 276.6 K to 316.8 K temperature range. The Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of solution were evaluated at 298 K by means of the Clarke and Glew equation. The temperature dependence of the Setschenow parameters for naphthalene in seawater has been studied and compared with the values calculated using current models for the salting-out of nonpolar molecules. The objective of this study was to determine if tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor (4hydroxyandr... more The objective of this study was to determine if tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor (4hydroxyandrostenedione; 4-OHA) affected plasma concentrations of o,p 0 -DDT and its metabolites, o,p 0 -DDD and o,p 0 -DDE, in mature tilapia. Male and female tilapia were injected 6 times intraperitoneally with o,p 0 -DDT (40 mg/kg) alone or in combination with 4-OHA (2 mg/ kg) over a 12 day period. An additional group of male fish was injected with tamoxifen (5 mg/ kg) plus o,p 0 -DDT. At the end of the treatment period, plasma samples were extracted and analyzed by GC/ECD. Females injected only with o,p 0 -DDT had significantly higher levels of o,p 0 -DDT compared with males. Interestingly, females and males treated concomitantly with o,p 0 -DDT and 4-OHA or tamoxifen had significantly lower concentrations of plasma o,p 0 -DDT (about 50%) compared with fish treated with only o,p 0 -DDT. These initial results suggest that an interaction between endocrine-active compounds occurs in vivo in tilapia and may involve alterations in metabolism of o,p 0 -DDT.

Data were collected on pollutants and metazoan parasites from 76 catfish from five localities in Chetumal Bay in October, 1996. Nineteen pollutants (pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)) were found in the catfish livers. Heavy metal content was not determined. Nineteen metazoan parasite species were recovered. After controlling for fish length and sampling station, there was a significant negative linear relationship between the intensity of the larval digenean Mesostephanus appendiculatoides and 1,1,1,-trichloro-2,2-bis (4-chlorophenyl) ethane (DDT) concentrations. Passive air sampling of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was carried out in the YRD in 2010-2011 to investigate their spatiotemporal distributions and estimate the risk of cancer from their inhalation. Annual concentrations were 151, 168, 18.8, 110, 17.9, and 35.0 pg m(-3) for HCB, ∑DDTs, ∑HCHs, ∑chlordane, mirex, and PCBs, respectively. The highest OCP and PCB concentrations were generally detected in the autumn and winter. The average concentrations of OCPs and PCBs for the different site groups followed the order urban ≈ urban-rural transition > rural. The lifetime excess cancer risks from the inhalation of OCPs and PCBs were <1.0 × 10(-6). The predicted cancer cases per lifetime associated with the inhalation of OCPs and PCBs are 12, 7, and 4 per ten thousand people for urban, urban-rural transition, and rural areas, respectively.
Solubility measurements of naphthalene in seawater of different salinities have been determined b... more Solubility measurements of naphthalene in seawater of different salinities have been determined by the Generator Column Method in the 276.6 K to 316.8 K temperature range. The Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of solution were evaluated at 298 K by means of the Clarke and Glew equation. The temperature dependence of the Setschenow parameters for naphthalene in seawater has been studied and compared with the values calculated using current models for the salting-out of nonpolar molecules. The objective of this study was to determine if tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor (4hydroxyandr... more The objective of this study was to determine if tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor (4hydroxyandrostenedione; 4-OHA) affected plasma concentrations of o,p 0 -DDT and its metabolites, o,p 0 -DDD and o,p 0 -DDE, in mature tilapia. Male and female tilapia were injected 6 times intraperitoneally with o,p 0 -DDT (40 mg/kg) alone or in combination with 4-OHA (2 mg/ kg) over a 12 day period. An additional group of male fish was injected with tamoxifen (5 mg/ kg) plus o,p 0 -DDT. At the end of the treatment period, plasma samples were extracted and analyzed by GC/ECD. Females injected only with o,p 0 -DDT had significantly higher levels of o,p 0 -DDT compared with males. Interestingly, females and males treated concomitantly with o,p 0 -DDT and 4-OHA or tamoxifen had significantly lower concentrations of plasma o,p 0 -DDT (about 50%) compared with fish treated with only o,p 0 -DDT. These initial results suggest that an interaction between endocrine-active compounds occurs in vivo in tilapia and may involve alterations in metabolism of o,p 0 -DDT.
