Since 1960 rangelands in the Awash Valley of Ethiopia have been subject to competing claims: wild... more Since 1960 rangelands in the Awash Valley of Ethiopia have been subject to competing claims: wildlife conservation, development to generate revenue for the state, and the use of the valley by pastoralists. This conflict, aggravated by drought, is a frequent occurrence between Afar and Kereyu pastoralists, the conser- vation, park and state plantations and has threatened the co-existence of the com- munities and the park, resulting in range deterioration. Studies were undertaken to examine options for livelihood diversification and to identify entry points for range improvement through consultation with key stakeholders, reviews of documents, and field data collection. Though livestock production is the major source of liveli- hood, local communities have undergone changes in terms of their livelihood. The percentage of bare ground varied between 4% and 25%, with many spots without any vegetation and the proportion of forbs ranging between 3% and 44%. The area is bush encroached and the range has degraded, thus decreasing the conservation value of the area for ecotourism. The options for livelihood diversification, range- land improvements and future research needs are outlined.

Proper and sustainable implementation of biosecurity practices is important to reverse such problems. This study was conducted in commercial poultry farms in two zones of Ethiopia to investigate farm characteristics, implementation of biosecurity practices, and biosecurity status (BS) using a structured questionnaire. The variables were grouped into three biosecurity factors, including conceptual, structural, and operational biosecurity, based on their homogeneity. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to summarize the results. Most commercial farms were owned by males (69.7%). The majority of the farms (40.3%) were located at a distance <50 m from residential areas. Farm owners do not provide biosecurity training to their employees (68.8%), which results in poor biosecurity implementation. The team had the good fortune to use the Livestock Sector Investment and Policy Toolkit (LSIPT) to develop the Bihar herd and economic sector model applied in the analytical effort. We are grateful to CIRAD, World Bank, FAO and ILRI, and especially Cees de Haan, retired World Bank chief livestock ofcer, for the great and long efforts taken to help develop this useful toolkit, and related tools used by the team in its herd and sector analysis. Bihar has come up with a Livestock Master Plan (LMP) which includes Livestock Sector Analysis and... more Bihar has come up with a Livestock Master Plan (LMP) which includes Livestock Sector Analysis and future projections pertaining to the sector. The Livestock Sector Plays an important role in building a strong state economy by increasing house hold incomes and employment opportunities along with food and nutritional security. In Bihar, we have started Agriculture Road Map in the year 2008. Presently we are implementing the third Agricultural Road Map (2017-2022) and the Livestock Development is an important component of it. I hope that the Livestock Master Plan will complement and support the implementation of the Agriculture Road Map and help the sector to grow and contribute to poverty reduction and economic gains for farmers. I expect that the Department of Animal and Fisheries Resources will leave no stone unturned to achieve the targets set up in the third Agricultural Road Map. I appreciate the effort and convey my good wishes for the initiative.
