We investigated the parasite communities of introduced Iberian hares (Lepus granatensis) and nati... more We investigated the parasite communities of introduced Iberian hares (Lepus granatensis) and native European hares (Lepus europaeus) in southern France, where Iberian hares were introduced locally 20 yr ago as a game animal. Parasite communities of sympatric populations of the two hare species and of allopatric populations of European hares were compared. Iberian hares in France harbored a depauperate community of parasites relative to the population in its native habitat in Spain. European hares in areas of sympatry also were infected by Nematodiroides zembrae, which normally infects Iberian hares on their native range.
The nematode Angiostrongylus cantonensis is the causative agent of human angiostrongyliasis, the ... more The nematode Angiostrongylus cantonensis is the causative agent of human angiostrongyliasis, the main clinical manifestation of which is eosinophilic meningitis. Although this parasite has been found recently in its definitive rat host in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain), showing a widespread distribution over the north-east part of the island, there are no available data regarding which snail and/or slug species are acting as intermediate hosts on this island. Consequently, the objective of this work was to determine the possible role of three mollusc species, Plutonia lamarckii, Cornu aspersum and Theba pisana, as intermediate hosts of A. cantonensis in Tenerife. Between 2011 and 2014, 233 molluscs were collected from five biotopes where rats had been found previously to harbor either adult worms or antibodies against A. cantonensis, and the identification was carried out on the basis of morphological features and a LAMP technique. The prevalence of A. cantonensis larvae in the mollusc samples, based on morphological identification, was 19.3%, whereas 59 out of the 98 individuals (60.2%) analyzed by LAMP were positive. Positive results were obtained for the three mollusc species analyzed and two of the positive samples, both obtained from P. lamarckii, were confirmed as positive by 18S rRNA and ITS1 PCR. Sequence analysis of 18S rRNA PCR products showed 100% similarity with previously published A. cantonensis sequences. These results may be relevant from a public health point of view, since all the biotopes from which the samples were obtained were in inhabited areas or areas with human activity, but it is also important from the perspective of a possible transmission to other accidental hosts, such as dogs and horses, animals that are present in some of the areas analyzed.

These species included: Brachylaima sp. (12.5%) (Trematoda); Taenia pisiformis (12.5%), T. polyacantha (25%), T. taeniaeformis (25%) and Mesocestoides litteratus (37.5%) (Cestoda); Eucoleus aerophilus (12.5%), Ancylostoma tubaeforme (12.5%), Toxocara cati (37.5%), Toxascaris leonina (62.5%), Vigisospirura potekhina potekhina (12.5%), Mastophorus muris (12.5%) and Physaloptera praeputialis (12.5%) (Nematoda). The helminth fauna in Iberian lynx is compared with that of L. canadensis and L. rufus in America, and for L. lynx in Eurasia. The potential relationships between the parasitological data and some geographical, historical and dietary factors are discussed.

We first performed a survey of the helminth fauna of A. sylvaticus in Sicily. Despite the small sampling effort, parasite species richness in Sicily is large in comparison with parasite species richness on other Mediterranean islands. We tested the nestedness of helminth parasite species from a number of Mediterranean localities using data compiled from epidemiological surveys of the helminth species of A. sylvaticus. We showed a nested pattern for woodmouse helminth species on western Mediterranean islands which suggests that the distribution of parasites on these islands is not the result of a random process. Properties of helminth parasites such as taxonomic group or life cycle and properties of the host population localities such as area size or the stability of the environment (estimated by mammal species diversity) contribute to the nestedness.

The spermatological characteristics of Collyricloides massanae (Digenea: Collyriclidae), a parasi... more The spermatological characteristics of Collyricloides massanae (Digenea: Collyriclidae), a parasite of Apodemus sylvaticus caught in France, were studied by means of transmission electron microscopy. The mature sperm of C. massanae presents two axonemes of different lengths with the 9 + "1" pattern of the Trepaxonemata, two bundles of parallel cortical microtubules, external ornamentation of the plasma membrane, spine-like bodies, one mitochondrion, a nucleus and granules of glycogen. An analysis of spermatological organisation emphasised some differences between the mature spermatozoon of C. massanae and those reported in the Gorgoderoidea species studied to date, specially belonging to the families Dicrocoeliidae, Paragonimidae and Troglotrematidae. The ultrastructural criteria described in C. massanae such as the morphology of both anterior and posterior spermatozoon extremities, the association "external ornamentation+cortical microtubules", the type 2 of external ornamentation and the spine-like bodies would allow us to bring closer the Collyriclidae to Microphalloidea. However, further ultrastructural and molecular studies are needed particularly in the unexplored taxa in order to fully resolve the phylogenetic position of the Collyriclidae.
The present study evaluates the phylogenetic position and systematic relationships of two species... more The present study evaluates the phylogenetic position and systematic relationships of two species of Mosgovoyia Spasskii, 1951 and related genera (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae) based on sequences of 28S ribosomal RNA and mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 (Nad1) genes. Both molecular data-sets show that M. pectinata (Goeze, 1782) and Schizorchis caballeroi Rausch, 1960 are sister species and that they are phylogenetically independent from M. ctenoides (Railliet, 1890). This shows unambiguously that Mosgovoyia [sensu ] is a non-monophyletic assemblage, supporting the validity of Neoctenotaenia Tenora, 1976, erected for M. ctenoides. The results also show that the morphologically related Ctenotaenia marmotae (Fröhlich, 1802) is the sister species of Andrya rhopalocephala (Riehm, 1881) and therefore represents a more derived lineage. Modified diagnoses are provided for Mosgovoyia and Neoctenotaenia.

Wild black rat Rattus rattus is regularly infected by the liver fluke Fasciola hepatica on Corsic... more Wild black rat Rattus rattus is regularly infected by the liver fluke Fasciola hepatica on Corsica. This report constitutes the only example of a murid rodent that plays an important epidemiological role for the Fasciolosis. We investigated the influence of such unusual parasite infection on black rat physiology by measuring its oxygen consumption at different ambient temperatures. Black rat energy requirements are influenced by body mass, temperature of the experiment and parasite infestation. The influence of the presence of F. hepatica was more pronounced for cold temperatures. The mean increase of 56% in oxygen requirements for infected rats is extremely high, indeed unexpected, according to previous knowledge. These high physiological constraints may be explained by the recent confrontation of the digenean and the rodent.

Materials were obtained from a naturally infected road-killed cat (Felis catus) from La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain). The mature spermatozoon of T. taeniaeformis is a filiform cell, which is tapered at both extremities and lacks mitochondria. It is characterised by the presence of (1) a single spirallised crested body about 140 nm thick, (2) a single axoneme of the 9+'1' pattern of trepaxonematan Platyhelminthes, (3) a twisted (40°) layer of submembranous cortical microtubules, (4) a periaxonemal sheath surrounding the axo-neme, (5) transverse intracytoplasmic walls and (6) a spirallised nucleus encircling the axoneme. The mature spermatozoon of T. taeniaeformis is also characterised by the presence of an apical cone in its anterior extremity and by the disorganisation of the axoneme in its posterior extremity. The ultrastructural characters of the mature spermatozoon of T. taeniaeformis are compared with those of other cestodes studied to date, with particular emphasis on other representatives of the family Taeniidae.
During vitellogenesis in the microphallid trematode Maritrema feliui, we distinguished four stage... more During vitellogenesis in the microphallid trematode Maritrema feliui, we distinguished four stages: (I) a stem cell stage of the gonial type; (II) an early differentiation stage with the main cell activity concentrated on the initiation of protein synthetic activity and the beginning of shell globule formation; (III) an advanced differentiation stage concentrated on a rapid intensification of protein synthetic activity, the progressive fusion of individual shell globules into large shell globule clusters and the formation of saturated lipid droplets and a small amount of βglycogen particles in the peripheral cytoplasm, considered as a store of nutritive reserves for the developing embryos; and (IV) the mature vitellocyte. Early vitellocyte maturation is characterised by: (1) an increase in cell volume; (2) extensive development of large, labyrinth-like cisternae of GER that produce proteinaceous granules; (3) the development of Golgi complexes engaged in packaging this material; and (4) a continuous enlargement of proteinaceous granules within vacuoles and their transformation into shell globule clusters composed of the heterogeneous material observed during vitellocyte cytodifferentiation. Mature vitelline cells are very rich in two types of cell inclusions accumulated in large amounts in their cytoplasm: (1) shell globule clusters, which play an important role in eggshell formation; and (2) a few osmiophobic lipid droplets of a saturated nature that undoubtedly represent nutritive reserves for the developing embryos. In addition, there are small numbers of β-glycogen particles in the peripheral cytoplasm of mature vitellocytes of this species. The general pattern and ultrastructure of vitellogenesis in M. feliui greatly resembles those observed in another microphallid trematode, Maritrema linguilla, in other digeneans and in some lower cestodes. Quantitative and qualitative variations in lipids (saturated and unsaturated) and glycogen (α-glycogen rosettes and β-glycogen particles) during platyhelminth vitellogenesis between the different species of trematodes and some lower cestodes are identified and discussed.
The sequences of the 18S small subunit ribosomal DNA of five species of cyclophyllidean cestodes ... more The sequences of the 18S small subunit ribosomal DNA of five species of cyclophyllidean cestodes from the families Davaineidae, Anoplocephalidae and Dilepididae were determined. A species of tetrabothridid was also sequenced. These 18S sequences were combined with other available eucestode sequences in GenBank. From the 1,838 sites in the alignment, 375 bp (20%) were excluded from the analysis due to alignment issues inferred by manual inspection. Phylogenetic trees were obtained by maximum parsimony, neighbour-joining distance and maximum likelihood methods. Analyses showed that Cyclophyllidea is monophyletic and separate from Tetrabothrius spp. Lyruterina nigropunctata, which is now included in the family Paruterinidae, is more closely related to davaineids of the genus Raillietina than Pseudidiogenes nana (Davaineidae). P. nana and Choanotaenia infundibulum (Dilepididae) derive from the Davaineidae (or Raillietininae). The two species of Taenia (T. parva and T. pisiformis) formed a monophyletic sister group to the Davaineidae and Anoplocephalidae. The systematics of the Paruterinidae have been problematic and our results suggest a review of this family including other species with paruterine organ located in other families. The position of the Idiogeninae as a subfamily in the Davaineidae is also reviewed.

Early vitellocyte maturation is characterised by: (1) an increase in cell volume; (2) extensive development of large, labyrinth-like cisternae of GER that produce proteinaceous granules; (3) the development of Golgi complexes engaged in packaging this material; and (4) a continuous enlargement of proteinaceous granules within vacuoles and their transformation into shell globule clusters composed of the heterogeneous material observed during vitellocyte cytodifferentiation. Mature vitelline cells are very rich in two types of cell inclusions accumulated in large amounts in their cytoplasm: (1) shell globule clusters, which play an important role in eggshell formation; and (2) a few osmiophobic lipid droplets of a saturated nature that undoubtedly represent nutritive reserves for the developing embryos. In addition, there are small numbers of β-glycogen particles in the peripheral cytoplasm of mature vitellocytes of this species. The general pattern and ultrastructure of vitellogenesis in M. feliui greatly resembles those observed in another microphallid trematode, Maritrema linguilla, in other digeneans and in some lower cestodes. Quantitative and qualitative variations in lipids (saturated and unsaturated) and glycogen (α-glycogen rosettes and β-glycogen particles) during platyhelminth vitellogenesis between the different species of trematodes and some lower cestodes are identified and discussed.
The sequences of the 18S small subunit ribosomal DNA of five species of cyclophyllidean cestodes ... more The sequences of the 18S small subunit ribosomal DNA of five species of cyclophyllidean cestodes from the families Davaineidae, Anoplocephalidae and Dilepididae were determined. A species of tetrabothridid was also sequenced. These 18S sequences were combined with other available eucestode sequences in GenBank. From the 1,838 sites in the alignment, 375 bp (20%) were excluded from the analysis due to alignment issues inferred by manual inspection. Phylogenetic trees were obtained by maximum parsimony, neighbour-joining distance and maximum likelihood methods. Analyses showed that Cyclophyllidea is monophyletic and separate from Tetrabothrius spp. Lyruterina nigropunctata, which is now included in the family Paruterinidae, is more closely related to davaineids of the genus Raillietina than Pseudidiogenes nana (Davaineidae). P. nana and Choanotaenia infundibulum (Dilepididae) derive from the Davaineidae (or Raillietininae). The two species of Taenia (T. parva and T. pisiformis) formed a monophyletic sister group to the Davaineidae and Anoplocephalidae. The systematics of the Paruterinidae have been problematic and our results suggest a review of this family including other species with paruterine organ located in other families. The position of the Idiogeninae as a subfamily in the Davaineidae is also reviewed.
