This research analyzes the behavior of Land Surface Temperature (TST) in São Luís, Maranhão, from the orbital sensor Landsat-8 /OLI for the month of September, a period that includes the interstitium between the rainy and dry season´s and thus presents lower seasonal interference for evaluation of surface thermal condition. The results show a high correlation between TST and densely populated areas. The median temperatures are associated with areas of low population density or the presence of extensive areas of exposed soil. .

Determinants of lycopene concentrations in humans have received limited attention. We had blood lycopene concentrations and lycopene consumption data available from 111 participants in a two-center cancer prevention trial involving -carotene and examined determinants of plasma lycopene levels cross-sectionally. The median plasma lycopene level was 0.59 mol/L (range 0.07-1.79). Low plasma concentrations of lycopene were associated with the following variables in univariate analyses: study site (Florida lower than Connecticut, P ϭ 0.001), being nonmarried (P ϭ 0.02), having lower income (P ϭ 0.003), being nonwhite race/ethnicity (P ϭ 0.03), having lower dietary lycopene intake (r ϭ 0.29, P ϭ 0.002), having lower plasma cholesterol (r ϭ 0.43, P ϭ 0.0001) and triglyceride levels (r ϭ 0.26, P ϭ 0.005), and consuming less vitamin C (r ϭ 0.20, P ϭ 0.03). Women had slightly higher plasma lycopene levels than men (0.65 vs. 0.58 mol/L; P ϭ 0.31), despite lower dietary intake of lycopene (1,040 vs. 1,320 g/d; P ϭ 0.50). Plasma lycopene levels did not differ in smokers and nonsmokers. In stepwise regression analyses, the determinants of plasma lycopene were plasma cholesterol, dietary lycopene, and marital status; these three variables explained 26% of the variance in plasma lycopene. Relatively few lifestyle and demographic factors were important determinants of plasma lycopene levels, with plasma cholesterol, marital status, and lycopene intake being of greatest importance. J. Nutr. 129: 849 -854, 1999.

Petrological studies using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), optical microscopy,... more Petrological studies using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS) and electron microprobe analyzer (WDS) showed the mineralogical, micromorphological and geochemical transformations due to the bauxitisation of anorthosite from the Barro Alto Stratiform Mafic-Ultramafic Complex (Central Brazil). The hydrolytic alteration of the anorthosite occurred in two different stages in accordance with the order of stability of the minerals to the weathering: firstly the bytownite and secondly the ferromagnesian minerals. The weathering solutions, benefited from the existing network of fractures, percolated the weakness zones of the minerals characterising the microsystem of contact in which cores of plagioclase and ferromagnesian minerals were formed. In the first stage, the plagioclases are altered directly to gibbsite, and at an early stage, during the change process, the gibbsite crystals surround the primary ferromagnesian minerals that are totally or partially preserved. The transformation is isalteritic and is responsible for formation of porous alteromorphs consisting of septa of coarse gibbsite and fine gibbsite. As the weathering process advances, the ferromagnesian minerals directly enter to goethite. The boxworks of gibbsite and goethite characterise a primary plasmic microsystem.
