share the psychological experiences of the youth who used a newly invented local drug called nyaope in rural communities,
Limpopo province, South Africa. A qualitative study, using focus group discussion was conducted among nyaope users between
18-35 years. Thematic data analysis was applied to develop themes, sub-themes, and categories. Findings indicated that nyaope
users encountered devastating psychological experiences such as; self-blame, stress, mental relaxation, drug dependency, and
addiction. Furthermore, the life of nyaope users seem to revolve around acquiring more nyaope than seeking rehabilitative
interventions to counteract the addiction. The Ubuntu theory was used to guide intervention in combating the nyaope problem. It
is essential to recruit, train and capacitate more social workers and social auxiliary workers who would specialize in substance
abuse services and prevention programmes. There should also be more rehabilitation centres to curb the growing number of drug
addicts in the local communities as well as increased funding for non-government organizations that render substance abuse
prevention services.

This study sought to explore and describe the lived experiences of the youth with regard to the street drug nyaope in Limpopo Province, South Africa, using a qualitative research approach and a phenomenological research design. 09 nyaope users were conveniently selected based on their availability at the Rite Substance non-government organisation in Tafelkop Village, Limpopo. One focus group discussion was held to gather data on the participants’ experiences of nyaope, with results subjected to thematic data analysis. Triangulation of findings was achieved through comparing field notes taken during discussions with the audio-recorded interviews, by a comparison of the findings with the literature, and also key informant interviews. The study found that nyaope users experience four devastating social effects: stigmatisation, family disorganization, criminal behaviour, and economic and educational failure. Furthermore, because of their drug addiction, users’ lives seem to revolve around the drug, with the constant compulsion to acquire to the drug exacerbating the health and social consequences. The study recommends that robust awareness campaigns be conducted in schools and other public places on the dangers of nyaope, involving the active participation of numerous stakeholders. In addition, it is recommended that far more rehabilitation centres be established in Limpopo Province to accommodate the high number of youth addicts. This research aims to make a significant contribution to the discipline of public health by informing readers of new and strategic ways to combat substance abuse in rural areas, which is ravaging the lives of young people.
