We hypothesized that the change came along with a set of challenges that were partly similar, partly different around the world. Challenges were met with either timid or firm immediate efforts of applying approaches, strategies and techniques that could make teaching an effective process, even under the new circumstances. The aims of the paper are to provide insights into the challenges online teaching faced during the Covid-19 pandemic in countries around the world, to identify the (applied or suggested) solutions for diverse challenges and similarities or differences between challenges/solutions. In our research, we used a qualitative method based on a purposeful sampling technique and collected data from the research work of scholars in countries from the six inhabited continents. Results confirmed our hypotheses. Although we had glimpses of the world on...

We try to illustrate the interactive, communicative and pragmatic values of the elements that make up the specialized discourse of advertisements. A series of printed Coca-Cola advertisements issued along years (1904- 2005) constitute the corpus of the analysis which starts from Jeffrey Schrank`s paper on “The language of Advertising Claims”.

Movie titles act like a code for deciphering the content of the movie plot. Besides their invaluable guidance of the audience into the reception and interpretation of the movie, they represent a key of success for box-offices. Therefore, we can say they “sell” the movie. The paper investigates some techniques in the translation of movie titles from English into Romanian. We have chosen a pragmatic perspective, as it is known that any translation is pragmatically oriented towards a recipient. Laying the stress on either the target language element or the source language one, the theory of domestication and foreignization helped us analyse our corpus of movie titles.

The paper draws on Michael Byram`s Model of Intercultural Communicative Competence. Theoretical presentation is followed by the analysis of Autobiography of Intercultural Encounters, in order to establish a set of implications for the teaching process, with respect to cognitive, affective and action outcomes.

The research questions for which we try to find answers are: 1. does an effective teacher-student interaction in the language classroom depend on the constructs teachers embrace? 2. consequently, do these perceptions depend on the experience the teachers have in teaching? We have tested the following hypotheses: a) the effective teacher-student interaction depends largely on the perceptions teachers have about it; b) teaching experience will not completely modify perceptions, but it will refine them and this will contribute to a more effective interaction in the classroom, with positive consequences on the development of academic achievement and social skills.

Individuals and nations are interested in defining themselves, in finding similarities and differences with the others around. The paper is an empirical study on the radiants of meaning in constructing Romanian national identity in young adults from “Vasile Alecsandri” University of Bacău. It is following closely Donald Carnbaugh`s classification of radiants of meaning in cultural discourse (2007). It is also meant to put to test the conception regarding national identity as developed by Wodak, Cillia, Liebhart, and Reisigl (2009) and to discuss outcomes for Romanian national identity images. The outcomes of the quantitative study resulted from word/phrase completion tasks and, in the absence of a well-defined Social Identity Theory of National Identity, the study draws on social identity approach, having as framework the Social Identity Theory and the Self-categorization Theory. The core components of these theories help us identify radiants of meaning in the images of national identity. By examining them, we notice their cognitive, behavioural, ethnic, cultural, evaluative and affective components that trigger equivalent meanings and content, in a fully integrated view on the national identity.

Constituting themselves as social practices (with a strong social impact on people’s everyday life) jokes were (and still are) an expression of people’s joy of life in happy times and a means of escaping the harsh reality in difficult times. Our paper has in view the latter context that triggers humour, analysing a set of jokes that used to be (more or less secretly) told during the communist regime in Romania. They are culture-specific jokes, highlighting the absurdities of Romania’s political situation under the communist government, laughing at Ceauşescu (the Romanian communist dictator), his family and staff and, at the same ti...
