We begin this chapter by providing a brief overview of the context of academic work in Canadian universities, followed by a description of the methodology for the survey of university academics that provided the foundation for this analysis. We then report and discuss study findings related to overall job satisfaction, provide an analysis of academic staff satisfaction with a range of workplace and institutional factors, and explore differences in reported satisfaction by demographic characteristics of academic staff. We summarise our findings and offer a number of conclusions in the final section of this chapter.

The online, bilingual survey was administered to full-time professors at 64 provincially-funded universities in Canada between October 2017 and June 2018 (n=2968). Findings suggest the majority of full-time, tenure-steam professors prefer both teaching and research and are engaged in both throughout the academic year. These findings are considered in light of broader changes in Canadian higher education including enrolment expansion, the increasing valorization of research, the development of new categories of academic labour, and the growth in precarious contract employment.

A major line of debate is whether globalization leads to convergence or divergence when it comes to the formulation of internal policies. As a way of contributing to this debate, this chapter compares three case studies of the evolution of higher education policy in three Canadian provinces between 1980 and 2008: British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec. The work is housed in the developing tradition of policy sociology and draws on both documentary analysis and interviews. This investigation comes at a time when governments across the political and ideological spectrums have subscribed to the belief that investment in higher education will translate into economic security and economic development at the individual, provincial and economic levels. We argue in this chapter that as higher education has become more central to the legitimization and accumulation functions served by the state, so higher education policy has been more closely tied to economic and social development. We conclude that higher education policy at the federal and provincial levels has been driven by a changing political and economic imperative.

In the post-phloem pathway, where diffusion is the predominant mode of transport, the largest molecule to show mobility was 16-kD dextran, with a Stokes radius of 2.6 nm. This suggests that the aqueous channels for cell-to-cell transport must be about 8 nm in diameter. Even the largest tracer injected into the sieve tubes, 400-kD fluorescein-labeled Ficoll with a Stokes radius of about 11 nm, was unloaded from the SE/CC complex. However, in contrast to smaller tracers (≤3 kD, with a Stokes radius ≤ 1.2 nm), the unloading of fluorescein-labeled Ficoll and other large molecules from the SE/CC complex showed an irregular, patchy distribution, with no further movement along the post-phloem pathway. Either the...

These included direct measurement of sieve tube turgor and several independent approaches to the measurement or calculation of water potentials in the peduncle, grain pericarp, and endosperm cavity. Sieve tube turgor measurements, osmotic concentrations, and Ψ measurements using dextran microdrops showed good internal consistency (i.e. Ψ = Ψs + Ψp) from 0 to −4 MPa. In normally watered plants, crease pericarp Ψ and sieve tube turgor were almost 1 MPa lower than in the peduncle. This suggests a high hydraulic resistance in the sieve tubes connecting the two. However, observations concerning exudation rates indicated a low resistance. In water-stressed plants, peduncle Ψ and crease pericarp Ψ were similar. In both treatments, th...

Based on the Canadian CAP (Changing Academic Profession) survey the general profile of the academic profession in Canada is described in terms of sociodemographic variables (gender, marital status, ethnicity, parents’ educational attainment, etc.), academic experience and perspectives on their work (academic attitudes, institutional and disciplinary affiliation). Canadian faculty present a strong international character and look at teaching and research as compatible.
