Before the test the diagnostics of the flow near the model surface is performed. The pressure, velocity, temperature, heat flux, electron concentration are measured or evaluated. To measure translational, vibrational and electron temperatures definition the special spectral apparatus is used. The values of temperatures are calculated using the experimental spectral intensity distributions across the plasma flow near the model. In all cases the rotational temperatures is assumed to be equal to translational one. For the electron concentration definition the Longmire probes is used . The external MHD generator model is a plate of size 250 x 400 mm with a number of electrodes on wind surface and an electromagnet system on under wind side. The model made of an insulating thermal protection material was installed at small angle of attack and streamlined by plasma flow exhausting through a flat nozzle of exit size 50 x 270 mm. The electromagnet system is a device for short operation time. The electric current is provided by a condenser battery discharge and the magnetic induction at the working surface of the model can reach ~0.4. Tesla and more. During the tests the external MHD generator electric parameters (voltage and current) are obtained and discussed. Preliminary gas flow in the discharge chamber and jet of the HFP is accompanied with numerous real gas processes (such as dissociation, ionization, chemical reactions, excitation of internal modes, energy translation between the particles of different kinds).

Practically the same models were tested in experiments at subsonic and supersonic facilities. The MHD interaction effects have been clearly observed and confirmed with fast flow visualization and measurements of the induced electrical potential at electrodes. The reasonable good correlation between sub-and hypersonic test results is found. 2D numerical simulation of the MHD interacting flow has demonstrated the rather satisfactory qualitatively agreement with experimental observation. One of the main conclusions at this stage of the study is that the near electrode phenomenology is far from the understanding and seems to be one of the most critical point in further development.
