The school environment here refers to the environment inside the school: principal, teachers, and foreign language (FL) classroom; and outside the school: the students' parents and the school community. Researchers have investigated teaching English as foreign language (TEFL) in primary schools from different perspectives, such as curriculum, teacher's role, and materials; however, little attention is paid to examine school environment as an important factor to improve the quality of TEFL in Indonesia. The data is taken from the results of my Masters study investigating the implementation of Indonesian language as LOTE program in Kingsbury Primary School (KPS), Bundoora, Melbourne, Australia. Interviews, questionnaires, and observations were employed to obtain the answers as to why Indonesian language was selected as the LOTE program in KPS. The stud...

Ahok language as a leader in Jakarta is important to study because he tends to speak using high pitch style and occasionally using coarse expressions, such as gendeng (dumb), bajingan (bastard), munafik (hypocritical), and gila (crazy). Politeness Theory, Conversational Maxims, and Implicature are used to explain which maxims violated by Ahok, its reason, and the implicatures as perceived by commentators in regard to Ahok’s expressions. This study found that Ahok did not violate maxim of quality and maxim of relevant because he had strong evidence to support his claim. From maxim of manner perspective, his statements such as bajingan, muak, munafik, gendeng, gila can be regarded as violating this maxim. From politeness theory, these statements were expressions rep...

The data was obtained from Islamic religious meetings called musyawarah in Malang, East Java, Indonesia. To help interpret the data, Situational and Metaphorical approach (Blom and Gumperz, 1972) and politeness theories (Brown and Levinson, 1987) were applied. The patterns of Indonesian-Javanese and of Javanese-Indonesian CS are indicated by the significant use of Javanese kromo words nggih, ngoten and saget. However, the patterns of Indonesian-Arabic and of Arabic-Indonesian CS are indicated by such Arabic expressions as barokah, alhamdulillahi jazakumullohu khoiro and assalamu'alaikum. The participants' reason for switching appears to be mostly influenced by metaphorical factors. In relation to this, the use of these Arabic expressions is foremost to gain religious merits. While other studies show that the meaning of insha'Allah has been considerably corrupted from its religious meaning, in the present study, however, insha'Allah was used to represent a total submission to God and as a greater sense of politeness.
