Specifically, the widespread disruption initiated by the pandemic provides an opportunity for transformative change within organizations and society. Furthermore, working women impacted during this punctuated equilibrium are likewise positioned for transformation. The authors suggest the pandemic and its impact on the formal workforce can be leveraged for individual and organizational development as well as transformation, resulting in advancement toward self-authorship and increased equity wi...

Our research questions were: 1) What does the literature tell us about immigration and health equity in the US? and 2) What does the literature tell us about the role of immigration status as a social determinant of health? Mental health and wellbeing among immigrant communities emerged as key themes

Learn about innovative teaching practices that increase youth civic engagement and how they augment our current conceptions of civic engagement.

However, the degree of receptivity toward refugee resettlement has vacillated over time. This study examines the challenges and opportunities that Refugee Resettlement Agencies (RRAs) experienced prior to and after the 2016 U.S. Presidential election. The findings presented in this paper, based on focus groups with the RRA staff, revealed that there is a greater need for understanding the refugee resettlement process and how changing immigration policies impact state-federal funding.

Welcoming America, a nonprofit organization based in metropolitan Atlanta, has grown a membership... more Welcoming America, a nonprofit organization based in metropolitan Atlanta, has grown a membership network throughout the United States. The network consists of nonprofit organizations and local governments that present their communities as "welcoming" for immigrants and refugees-referred to as "Welcoming Cities." In 2018, Welcoming America launched the "One Region Initiative" to cultivate a concept of "welcoming region" to transcend municipal boundaries. The pilot initiative took place in the Atlanta metropolitan area, a major emerging immigrant gateway, and involved community listening sessions and a 56-member steering committee, representing the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. The One Region Initiative disseminated recommendations to the public in a regional strategic welcoming plan in August 2018. Through an applied, community-based participatory research framework, this paper examines the process of the One Region Initiative as an example of a diverse and dynamic epistemic community for addressing challenges and opportunities of immigrant integration and receptivity within a major-emerging immigrant gateway.

Specifically, this research conceptualizes emotional intelligence (EI) as an alternative to building brand equity for B2B companies beyond name recognition, product quality and catchy slogans. Additionally, the authors closely analyze social media content marketing by B2Bs as a channel through which to exercise EI with the goal of enhancing brand image and growing brand equity. Design/methodology/approach This study takes a conceptual approach, building on current literature to develop a model of functional and emotional paths to B2B brand equity. The study uses content analysis methodology to examine 11 “best in class” B2B companies recognized for their social media content marketing. The analysis reveals the level to which each company demonstrates the collective EI of the firm through content marketing. Findings EI is a learned sk...

One example is the welcoming cities movement that has formed a growing network of municipalities across the United States that are encouraging efforts for warmer receptivity and more efficient immigrant integration. Through a qualitative methodology including systematic content analysis of primary documents and key informant interviews, this article examines when, why, and how recent local receptivity and immigrant integration initiatives and policies formed and coalesced and how different places are implementing those policies. We examine 3 case study cities-Nashville, Dayton, and Chicago-through Kingdon's multiple streams approach analytical framework to demonstrate how multisector forces at multiple scales (i.e., municipal, state, and national) facilitate or hinder the formation of local receptivity and integration initiatives and policies.

The question of care and what it means both conceptually and practically in the designated arena ... more The question of care and what it means both conceptually and practically in the designated arena of Child and Youth Care is a vexing one in the 21 st century. Without a doubt, there are increasing numbers of young people who are either demonstrably in need of care or perceive themselves to be either lacking adequate care or simply existing outside those social spaces where care is available. Perhaps, there is no better exemplar of the contested set of relations that is contemporary childhood than those young people traversing national borders. Some of these young people travel with family members, but an ever-increasing number travel unaccompanied by parents or any other form of adult relation. Of these, a group particularly at risk are those without legal documentation. We would argue that this group of young people is urgently in need of our attention as child and youth care workers and scholars.

At the same time when civic engagement is gaining increased recognition as a key learning compete... more At the same time when civic engagement is gaining increased recognition as a key learning competency within many colleges and universities, numerous studies suggest declines in student involvement in communities and political affairs. These differences may be due, in part, to different understandings among students and scholars with regard to the goals and activities that comprise civic engagement. This review of pedagogical design uses two case studies to examine the importance of making implicit notions of civic engagement explicit in classroom discussions. The authors build upon Battistoni's finding that distinct conceptual frameworks of civic engagement exist across academic disciplines and offer recommendations on how to apply Battistoni's conceptual models to clarify pedagogical designs and communication with students.

However, this paper focuses on barriers that immigrants of diverse statuses living in the U.S.-along with their families-may face in accessing health services during the pandemic, as well as implications of these barriers for COVID-19 prevention and response efforts. We report findings from a scoping review about immigration status as a social determinant of health and discuss ways that immigration status can impede access to health care across levels of the social ecology. We then develop a conceptual outline to explore how changes to federal immigration policies and COVID-19 federal relief efforts implemented in 2020 may have created additional barriers to health care for immigrants and their families. Improving health care access for immigrant populations in the U.S. requires interventions at all levels of the social ecology and across various social determinants of health, both in response to COVID-19 and to strengthen health systems more broadly.

Unfortunately, status and responsibilities of being undocumented presents obstacles that can be difficult to overcome for many young people. This young author describes the sacrifices her parents made for her to have educational opportunities and the struggles she went through to achieve her dreams of becoming a doctor. She skillfully highlights how being undocumented places additional barriers that often limit the chances of success and thriving.
