According to the United States Geological Survey, brackish groundwater is abundant in the southwestern states including California; hence it can potentially be considered a new source for California’s water portfolio. Most of membrane-based desalination technologies (e.g. reverse osmosis) have high energy demand and cost. Using renewable energy (mostly solar photovoltaics) in concert with membrane-based water desalination can be utilized to develop decentralized and off-grid brackish water desalination systems especially for remote and rural regions. In this paper, the results of a case study on decentralized off-grid brackish water system have been presented and discussed. The system utilizes a high pressure pump that can provide a feed flow rate of 2.2 gpm of at 140 psi. The system is run by solar photovoltaic ...

For example, a user might be able to specify a similarity measure between the covariates, or an embedding (feature vector) for each covariate, which is created from unlabeled data. In particular for text classification, the covariates (words) can be described by word embeddings or similarity measures from lexical resources like WordNet. We propose a new method to use such embeddings of covariates for logistic regression. Our method consists of two main components. The first component is a Gaussian process (GP) with a covariance function that models the correlations between covariates, and returns a noise-free estimate of the covariates. The second component is a logistic regression model that uses these noise-free estimates. One advantage of our model is that the covariance function can be adjusted to the training data using maximum likelihood. Another advantage is that new covariates that never occurred in the training data can be incorporated at test time, while run-time increases only linearly in the number of new covariates. Our experiments demonstrate the usefulness of our method in situations when only small training data is available.

However, a domain-specific corpus might be limited in size and, as a consequence, a query term’s context vector can be sparse. Furthermore, even terms in a domain-specific corpus are sometimes ambiguous, which makes it desirable to be able to find the synonyms related to only one word sense. We introduce a new method for enriching a query term’s context vector by using the context vectors of a query term’s translations which are extracted from a comparable corpus. Our experimental evaluation shows, that the proposed method can improve synonym acquisition. Furthermore, by selecting appropriate translations, the user is able to prime the query term to one sense.

In this study, four new strains of Haloarcula sp., isolated from saline lakes of the Atacama Desert, are reported and studied by high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap-MS/MS) for the first time. In addition, determination of the carotenoid pigment profile from the new strains of Haloarcula sp., plus two strains of Halorubrum tebenquichense, and their antioxidant activity by means of several methods is reported. The effect of biomass on cellular viability in skin cell lines was also evaluated by MTT assay. The cholinesterase inhibition capacity of six haloarchaea (Haloarcula sp. ALT-23; Haloarcula sp. Its main objective is to provide recommendations and guidelines for improving physical accessibility in educational spaces. To this end, we adopt a hybrid methodology to carry out a systematic survey of the main spatial and architectural barriers in an educational institution (Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Alagoas, located in Maceio) using the collection data worksheets for evaluating the spatial accessibility from the check items of ABNT - NBR9050, and commented routes, with counting aid of a teacher with physical disabilities to identify incompatibilities and other problems that the rule cited cannot contemplate. Analyzing the behavior of an attacker is critical for determining the scope of damage of a cyber ... more Analyzing the behavior of an attacker is critical for determining the scope of damage of a cyber attack, recovering, and fixing system vulnerabilities. However, finding all attacker's traces from log data is a laborsome task, where the performance of existing machine learning methods is still insufficient. In this work, we focus on the task of detecting all processes that were executed by the attacker. For this task, standard anomaly detection methods like Isolation Forest, perform poorly, due to many processes that are used by both the attacker and the client user. Therefore, we propose to incorporate prior knowledge about the temporal concentration of the attacker's activity. In general, we expect that an attacker is active only during a relatively small time window (block assumption), rather than being active at completely random time points. We propose a generative model that allows us to incorporate such prior knowledge effectively. Experiments on intrusion log data, shows that the proposed method achieves considerably better detection performance than a strong baseline method which also incorporates the block assumption.

In the present study, MFC was evaluated, for the first time, applied to inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to analyze different and complexmatrix samples. Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn were determined by ICP OES, while As, Cd, Co, Cu, Hg, Mo, Mn, Ni, Se, Sb, Pb, and V were determined by ICP-MS. MFC results were compared with those obtained using external standard calibration (EC) for both techniques and in all cases, MFC showed equal or superior accuracy (recoveries between 80-120%) compared to EC, and lower relative standard deviation (RSDs ≤ 10%). Several tests were also performed using only two nebulization gas flows to build linear models for calibratio...

In practice, many true regression coefficients might be negligibly small, but nonzero, which we refer to as quasi‐sparseness. Spike‐and‐slab priors can be tuned to ignore very small regression coefficients and, as a consequence, provide a trade‐off between prediction accuracy and interpretability. However, spike‐and‐slab priors with full support lead to inconsistent Bayes factors, in the sense that the Bayes factors of any two models are bounded in probability. This is clearly an undesirable property for Bayesian hypotheses testing, where we wish that increasing sample sizes lead to increasing Bayes factors favoring the true model. As a remedy, we suggest disjunct support spike‐and‐slab priors, for which we prove consistent Bayes factors in the quasi‐sparse setting, and show experimentally fast growing Bayes factors favoring the true mod...

GFI family members share near invariant SNAG and ZF domains at their N- and C-termini, respectively. Their SNAG domains recruit Lysine Specific Demethylase (LSD)-1, a dominant effector of transcriptional repression by GFI proteins, while ZFs 3-5 of both GFI1 and GFI1B recognize a common consensus element in target promoters. A non-homologous linker separates the SNAG and ZF domains. Despite near identical DNA binding and co-factor recruitment characteristics, GFI family proteins direct distinct hematopoietic outcomes. When some monitoring systems based on wireless sensor networks are deployed, sensing and transmission configurations of sensor nodes may be adjusted exploiting the relevance of the considered events, but efficient detection and classification of events of interest may be hard to achieve. Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP1), the terminal effector of the Hippo pathway, is a transcriptional co-activator and a potent growth promoter that has emerged as a critical oncogene. Overexpression of YAP1 has been implicated in promoting resistance to chemo-, radiation and targeted therapy in various cancers. However, the role of YAP1 in radioresistance in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is currently unknown. We evaluated the role of YAP1 in radioresistance in TNBC in vitro, using two approaches to inhibit YAP1: 1) genetic inhibition by YAP1 specific shRNA or siRNA, and 2) pharmacological inhibition by using the small molecule inhibitor, verteporfin that prevents YAP1 transcriptional activity. Our findings demonstrate that both genetic and pharmacological inhibition of YAP1 sensitizes TNBC cells to radiation by inhibitin...

These compounds exhibit high second‐order nonlinear optics (NLO) activity, especially, those with F2‐ppy ligands; this substituent modulates the charge transfer, optimizing the NLO response. The compounds also show blueshifted emissions, both in solution and as a solid film, which is desirable for use in light‐emitting devices. This is the first use of the synthesized complexes for application in the two tasks.
