This study investigated the number and severity of life events, Type A behaviour, coping strategi... more This study investigated the number and severity of life events, Type A behaviour, coping strategies and social support differences between chronic fatigue and irritable bowel syndrome patients prior to illness and between these groups and healthy controls. Although few differences were found between the groups for life events, a number of interesting results emerged with regard to different aspects of Type A behaviour, various coping strategies and social support. These findings are discussed with respect to existing research in the field.

It is a very unique and personal experience. Any form of loss can be painful and summon up complex, unaccustomed and competing emotions, feelings and thoughts. How we cope with loss is influenced by our previous experience of loss, our upbringing and background, our current levels of pressure or stress, people support around us and our resilience. Some people find it preoccupies every waking thought, whilst others can compartmentalise and focus on other distractions. Work can help provide a routine and structure, but others might find themselves very tearful and emotional, unable to concentrate or make decisions. We can be locked into specific thoughts or memories, which may be happy (remembering a smile or a hug) or distressing (seeing the dead body). Or we might have floating and fleeting images, maybe of the person suddenly walking back into the room or hearing their voice. It could affect our sleeping, keeping us awake at night with nightmares, or impact on our diet, eating more or less than we usually do. Our energy

It's a stimulation explosion. When do we actually experience peace and quiet, take a real break, enjoy tranquillity and silence? Probably not very often. In fact, many people say they hate silence; it's a void which has to be filled; the silence is deafening. That's because it's pretty alien to us. We don't know what to do. Many of us may relax after a long day at work by putting our feet up and watching TV or as it seems to be these days, half watching TV and half tapping away into our mobile phone or tablet device. Distraction, distraction, distraction. Even watching TV is a feast of visual and auditory stimulation; vibrant colours flashing in front of us or thumping music blaring out. We want to be entertained, to laugh or to experience drama or horror. It's still stimulation overload.
