Conocimiento Del Contenido en Los Programas De Preparación De Profesores De Inglés Como Lengua Extranjera

El objetivo de este proyecto es analizar el conocimiento base de los futuros profesores de ingles... more El objetivo de este proyecto es analizar el conocimiento base de los futuros profesores de ingles, sus creencias, y rendimiento en el aula durante su formacion academica, con el objetivo de disenar mapas de progreso para controlar la calidad y la eficacia de la adquisicion del conocimiento pedagogico, conocimiento didactico del contenido y conocimientos de contenidos. Este trabajo analiza el conocimiento del contenido y la forma en que este se refleja en los programas de ensenanza de ingles como lengua extranjera de las universidades chilenas. Se estudiaron dieciocho mallas curriculares; los resultados muestran la existencia de diferentes cursos orientados al desarrollo del conocimiento de contenido. Estos resultados ofrecen una descripcion de como se categoriza el conocimiento contenido en los programas de ensenanza de ingles y sus implicaciones en la preparacion de los maestros.

Pre-Service EFL Teachers' Perceptions of Written Corrective Feedback in a Wiki-Based Environment

This paper explores Chilean pre-service teachers' perceptions about the provision of correcti... more This paper explores Chilean pre-service teachers' perceptions about the provision of corrective feedback in a wiki environment during the collaborative writing of an argumentative essay. After conducting a semi-structured interview on 22 participants, the data were processed through the content analysis technique. The results show that students have positive perceptions about corrective feedback, provided through a wiki virtual environment, which in turn facilitates feedback provision and impacts language learning effectively. Some of the positive perceptions about virtual feedback refer to permanent access, efficiency, simultaneous revision and immediacy. It would then be advisable to integrate wikibased feedback as a methodology for the language classroom and collaborative writing tasks. Keywords—Argumentative essay, focused corrective feedback, perception, wiki environment.

Effect of Metalinguistic Feedback on Chilean Preservice Teachers’ Written Use of the Third Person Singular Suffix -s

This study addresses the impact of 2 types of written corrective feedback (WCF) on the acquisitio... more This study addresses the impact of 2 types of written corrective feedback (WCF) on the acquisition of the third person singular -s in English. The study followed a quasi-experimental design: 2 experimental groups and 1 control group that included 57 preservice teachers from a Chilean university. The experimental groups underwent a treatment based on the provision of direct metalinguistic feedback (group 1) and indirect metalinguistic feedback (group 2). The control group did not receive any type of WCF. At the end of the treatment, a posttest was run and, 1 month later, a delayed posttest was given. Finally, a semistructured interview was conducted in order to identify the L2 learners’ perceptions about the provision of WCF through a Wiki environment. There was no significant difference between the experimental groups on the posttest. However, on the delayed test, group 2 outperformed group 1.

The use of technology to motivate students learning is an ally for teachers when they want to innovate and develop new strategies. The aim of this action research study is to assess the effectiveness of using the Quizizz online platform to improve one participant’s listening skill to recognize descriptive adjectives. The participant was one English language learner from an A1 level in a semi private school from Concepcion, Chile. During 5 sessions he used and played on the Quizizz platform, there he listened to words, simple phrases and complex sentences. He had to choose the correct picture that represented that the descriptive adjectives that he had heard. Preservice teachers are prepared to learn an advanced level of English and teach the language from 5th to 12th grade in the Chilean educational system. In the context of their first EFL Methodology course in year four, preservice teachers have to create a five-minute digital story that starts from a critical incident they have experienced as teachers-to-be during their observations or interventions in the schools. A critical incident can be defined as a happening, a specific incident or event either observed by them or involving them. The happening sparks their thinking and may make them subsequently think differently about the particular event. When they create their digital stories, preservice teachers put technology, teaching practice and theory together to narrate a story that is complemented by still images, moving images, text, sound effects and music. El programa de intercambio posiciona a estudiantes hablantes de español y a sus familias como los que saben, desafíando a educadores monolingües (en ejercicio y en formación) de los EE.UU. en sus creencias y puntos de vista que suelen marginar a los estudiantes inmigrantes y sus familias. Nos basamos en las narrativas de familias y educadores chileno/as y las de los participantes de los EE. UU., para exhibir el poder de un contexto que muestra a la posición del hispanohablante como deficiente, la cual domina el panorama de los EE. UU. Este artículo finaliza con una discusión sobre cómo el posicionar a estudiantes lingüísticamente diversos y ricos en conocimiento, apoya la competencia cultural.

This is associated with their classroom performance and considering the dimensions of people management, instructional management, and behaviour management. Methodology: The present study used a qualitative research methodology and a case study design. The participants were 30 pre-service teachers studying in two Chilean universities and 30 novice graduate English teachers from the same institutions. The data collection techniques were non-participant observations concerning the subjects’ classroom interventions and semi-structured interviews with stimulated recall based on the former. The researchers analysed the collected data by using the ATLAS.ti software for content analysis. El estudio tuvo como objetivo explorar y describir las prácticas de enseñanza de los futuros prof... more El estudio tuvo como objetivo explorar y describir las prácticas de enseñanza de los futuros profesores de inglés como lengua extranjera respecto de las habilidades de gestión del aula, implementación de planificaciones de clases, estrategias de enseñanza y provisión de retroalimentación. Se observaron 160 clases en diferentes regiones del país. El estudio siguió un diseño cuantitativo no experimental. Para obtener información demográfica y detectarlas prácticas en el aula se diseñó un instrumento compuesto de dos partes con una escala de observación Likert. Después de la recopilación de datos, se calcularon estadísticos descriptivos, one-way ANOVA y pruebas post hoc de Tukey HSD. Conducted in a semi-public school in Chile, this action research study aims at determining the ch... more Conducted in a semi-public school in Chile, this action research study aims at determining the change in 18 English as a foreign language young learners' performance regarding their understanding of instructions after being exposed to an audiovisual materials-based teaching strategy. With the use of a lesson observation report for assessing the way they follow instructions and a Likert scale to analyze their attitudes towards the strategy, findings show there was a positive change in their performances and that these learners regard this strategy as beneficial, which supports the belief that the inclusion of audiovisual aids benefits young learners when learning English. * This paper is part of the research grant FONDECYT 1150889: "Las dimensiones cognitivas, afectivas y sociales del proceso de planificación de aula y su relación con los desempeños pedagógicos en estudiantes de práctica profesional y profesores nóveles de pedagogía en inglés".

The aim of this study is to analyze the role of conceptual metaphors for unpacking research participants’ conceptualizations about lesson planning in Chilean schools. An eliciting metaphor questionnaire was designed to require respondents to complete the statement “lesson planning is like…because…”. The data were analyzed through content analysis for metaphors, as follows: pre-analysis, labeling, classification, categorizing, peer judgment. The questionnaire was applied to 54 Chilean teachers from different schools. Four metaphor categories were obtained: Map, Foundations, Instructions, Burden.

Classroom management is a permanent concern and challenge for teachers. Good classroom management... more Classroom management is a permanent concern and challenge for teachers. Good classroom management practices are critical to facilitate effective learning and therefore, researchers are continuously exploring ways to measure this construct from different perspectives. Questionnaires are one of the tools used to gather relevant data. This article presents an approach to the validation of a classroom management questionnaire. To validate this questionnaire, items were assessed by experts in the field through the application of two member checking techniques, namely, Delphi and Fleiss’ Kappa that implied a series of changes in some of the items. Finally, a small pilot testing conducted among pre and in-service teachers of English yielded an excellent Cronbach’s Alpha, resulting in a highly reliable questionnaire.

This paper describes a research project focused on identifying student-teachers’ critical thinkin... more This paper describes a research project focused on identifying student-teachers’ critical thinking performance levels in scientific reasoning and, secondly, on analyzing the reliability level of the Critical Thinking Tasks test (CTT). As part of the methodology, a non-probabilistic sample of 129 teacher education students from different majors at Bio-Bio University was considered, and the Critical Thinking Task test was applied to collect data. The data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, reliability measures and mean score differences. The data showed that the instrument is reliable (α=0,79); there is also a relatively low performance in the global test and its dimensions; and there are differences between the different teacher education programs. It is concluded that the instrument is reliable, and findings support the idea that knowledge-based areas influence critical thinking. Conducted in a semi-public school in Chile, this action research study aims at determining the ch... more Conducted in a semi-public school in Chile, this action research study aims at determining the change in 18 English as a foreign language young learners' performance regarding their understanding of instructions after being exposed to an audiovisual materials-based teaching strategy. With the use of a lesson observation report for assessing the way they follow instructions and a Likert scale to analyze their attitudes towards the strategy, findings show there was a positive change in their performances and that these learners regard this strategy as beneficial, which supports the belief that the inclusion of audiovisual aids benefits young learners when learning English. * This paper is part of the research grant FONDECYT 1150889: "Las dimensiones cognitivas, afectivas y sociales del proceso de planificación de aula y su relación con los desempeños pedagógicos en estudiantes de práctica profesional y profesores nóveles de pedagogía en inglés".

The aim of this study is to analyze the role of conceptual metaphors for unpacking research participants’ conceptualizations about lesson planning in Chilean schools. An eliciting metaphor questionnaire was designed to require respondents to complete the statement “lesson planning is like…because…”. The data were analyzed through content analysis for metaphors, as follows: pre-analysis, labeling, classification, categorizing, peer judgment. The questionnaire was applied to 54 Chilean teachers from different schools. Four metaphor categories were obtained: Map, Foundations, Instructions, Burden.

Classroom management is a permanent concern and challenge for teachers. Good classroom management... more Classroom management is a permanent concern and challenge for teachers. Good classroom management practices are critical to facilitate effective learning and therefore, researchers are continuously exploring ways to measure this construct from different perspectives. Questionnaires are one of the tools used to gather relevant data. This article presents an approach to the validation of a classroom management questionnaire. To validate this questionnaire, items were assessed by experts in the field through the application of two member checking techniques, namely, Delphi and Fleiss’ Kappa that implied a series of changes in some of the items. Finally, a small pilot testing conducted among pre and in-service teachers of English yielded an excellent Cronbach’s Alpha, resulting in a highly reliable questionnaire.

This paper describes a research project focused on identifying student-teachers’ critical thinkin... more This paper describes a research project focused on identifying student-teachers’ critical thinking performance levels in scientific reasoning and, secondly, on analyzing the reliability level of the Critical Thinking Tasks test (CTT). As part of the methodology, a non-probabilistic sample of 129 teacher education students from different majors at Bio-Bio University was considered, and the Critical Thinking Task test was applied to collect data. The data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, reliability measures and mean score differences. The data showed that the instrument is reliable (α=0,79); there is also a relatively low performance in the global test and its dimensions; and there are differences between the different teacher education programs. It is concluded that the instrument is reliable, and findings support the idea that knowledge-based areas influence critical thinking.
