For centuries, thinkers have debated the nature of society and its historical and future role. Take for instance Plato's "Republic," which explored the nuances of political governance and built a case for an ideal community, or even Saint Augustine's "City of God," which described a human community in contrast to a city governed by the grace of God. Regardless of how humanity has been scrutinized in the past, more recently the direction and nature of society has been examined in essays about whether or not people have greater and better access to information in modern day. Where does our information society currently reside today? It is neither fully “dystopian,” nor bad; nor is it fully “eutopian,” or good. It is not “utopian,” because it actually exists. It is a conundrum. So far in literary history we’ve been given three “topias” from which to choose: good, bad, and nowhere. It is time to let go of these weighty places of the past and embrace the historical location of our information society where we balance, as best we can, the extremes of current reality. In borrowing from the Greek, “amphi,” or, “on both sides,” our “amphitopia” of the present is an ambiguous place.

Similarly, U.S. women active in the Catholic Church have various options for participating in the life of the Church, yet for many, it is not enough. Disparity between being called equals in dignity and likeness in the Church and the actual roles available to women in the structure of the Catholic Church complicate discussion of a “New Feminism” and can be rectified in part through dialogue, governance and further theological study.

The author took a closer look at fundraising campaign sites to see if her intuitive judgments about these could be translated into a logical, research-supported set of best practices. She set up a study that gauged the ease of use and effectiveness of campaign Web sites. Along with reviewing Web sites of award-winning fundraising campaigns, she interviewed fundraisers who worked at the schools that won the awards and surveyed another group of fundraisers about what makes fundraising Web sites effective and easily navigable. Altogether, the author canvassed more than 35 college and university development professionals whose insights helped her outline the characteristics of campaign fundraising Web sites that look good and work well. Briefly, effective campaign Web sites have the following attributes: (1) They are no more than two clicks away from the homepage of the institution; (2) They focus on people, not buildings; and (3) Their branding is cohesive with the rest of the Web site and with the institution itself. This article presents some valuable insights about six major factors that contribute to a campaign Web site's success.

How does fire affect the aggregation patterns of trees in a species-poor oak woodland? Location: ... more How does fire affect the aggregation patterns of trees in a species-poor oak woodland? Location: East-central Minnesota, USAMore than 10 000 trees with DBH > 2 cm (comprising more than 11 000 stems) were monitored in a 16-ha grid on an annual basis from 1995- 2001 in a species-poor temperate woodland. Different portions of the grid experienced different frequencies of controlled burns. Aggregation indices were calculated for individual species and individual size classes within species. A community-wide aggregation index was also calculated for different burn units. Spatial data were managed, and many of the aggregation indices calculated using a GIS ArcInfo™ (ESRI). Fire initially increased clumping, although repeated fires reduced it, a finding that suggests a corollary to the intermediate-disturbance hypothesis, the corollary stating that intermediate levels of disturbance are expected to maximize community-wide patterns of aggregation. Analyses also showed that all species are aggregated at small scales, that the degree of aggregation of a stem type (species or size) declines with distance from individual stems, that the degree of aggregation of large stems is usually less than that of small stems, and that rare species are more aggregated than common species. Findings from this study are consistent with those from similar studies in other temperate and tropical forests, woodlands, and savannas. Conclusion: The spatial patterns of trees in this woodland are dynamic, continually changing in response to the relative strengths of the often opposing forces of competition, which tends to reduce clumping, and disturbance, which, at low and intermediate frequencies, tends to increase it.
