I argue that Rawls had very good grounds for excluding the right to own productive capital from his list of basic rights; in short, that such a move would not enhance justice as fairness. Tomasi's embrace of American capitalism as an approximation of what entrenched economic liberties can be expected to deliver simply makes an incredible claim less plausible. Keywords Property rights Á Justice Á Tomasi Á Rawls In Free Market Fairness (2012), John Tomasi shows himself to be a man with both a map and a mission. The map shows a frozen sea with advocates of classical liberalism and contemporary libertarianism camped on one coast and (post-Rawlsian) 'high liberals' on the other. The two camps are within sight, but beyond the hearing, of each other and each group goes about its routine business, aware of but little interested in what happens on the other side of the intervening wasteland. Map in hand, Captain Tomasi's mission is to force his ice-breaker S.S. Market Democracy between the two camps (drawing in supporters as he may) with his compass set firmly upon reaching the higher moral ground of free market fairness that lies somewhere beyond (even if it is a challenge to imagine an icebreaker occupying the high ground!) (Tomasi 2012, pp. 99-100).

The collection has a powerful empirical basis as well as exploring a range of conceptual issues in the field of political representation. In the first of our more empirically focused papers, Loes Aaldering considers the under-representation of the less well educated in the Netherlands. Following this, Sergiu Gherghina and Brigitte Geissel assess the relationship between citizen attitudes to decision-makers and their forms and level of political participation in the German context. Aleš Kudrnáč and Pat Lyons next use data from the Czech Republic to examine the effects of parents upon their children's political participation, while Henrik Christensen et al. look at the impact of deliberation upon discursive participation in a Finnish setting. Markus Wagner and Thomas Meyer develop our theme by considering the changing role of parties of the radical right in Europe, while Luis Ramiro and Raul Gomez study the case of Podemos and the radical left in Spain. The next two papers, by Margit van Wessel and Sveinung Arnesen, take a rather different view of citizen disillusionment and 'stealth democracy'. The paper by Gijs Schumacher and Nathalie Giger looks at leaders and those who choose them, and the issue closes with an evaluation by Carlo Invernizzi Accetti and Ian Zuckerman of the dynamics of militant democracy.

(Self-)described as 'the most sociable and loving of men', he always seemed happiest on his own - and he did much to keep it that way. A self-confessed hypochondriac who despised doctors. A man who seemed to feel that most women were intrigued by him (perhaps they were) but whose love affairs almost
