In contrast to most existing models that linearly scale individual losses, a comprehensive analytic coupling loss model is used that also considers the interdependencies between mismatches in numerical aperture and core diameter, as well as radial and longitudinal offsets. As a typical example, the coupling losses of A4a.2 step-index multimode fibers are analyzed for an equilibrium mode distribution. The results show considerably less conservative coupling loss estimations than with traditional models, improving link power budgeting.

Growing demands for quality of service, e.g., for IPTV distribution in homes and for Ethernet based industrial control networks will necessitate Gigabit speeds in the near future. We present an overview on recent advances in the design of spectrally efficient and robust Gigabit-over-SI-POF transmission systems.

Unfortunately, their propagation properties depend on the excitation conditions. We propose a launching technique using a fibre stub that can tolerate fabrication tolerances in terms of tilts and off-sets to a large extent. A study of the influence of displaced connectors along the transmission link shows that the power distributions approach a steady-state power distribution very similar to the initial distribution established by the proposed launching scheme.

The delay can be tuned in fine and coarse range easily.

Simulation results show a reach well suited for metro applications.

For the first time, we give a comprehensive overview over the real channel capacity of POF links up to 100 m, based on experimental investigations and complex system simulations. More than 2 Gbit/s can be transmitted at very low BER with existing components. Improved devices will give place for further progress.

The paper will give an overview to the different options for transmitters, fibers and modulation formats. Two different proposals for a standard Gigabit interface are under discussion in the German POF standardization group AK412.7.1. A main focus will be set on the use of LED as low cost components and latest results using new green (530 nm) LED for 1 Gbps transmission over 50 m SI-POF will be demonstrated.

With this scheme reliable high-speed short-reach interconnects are feasible that can be easily combined to fiber ribbons.
