In novels, short stories, films, radio, television and now in computer games, private detectives and psychopaths, prim poisoners and overworked cops, tommy gun gangsters and cocaine criminals are the very stuff of modern imagination, and their creators one mainstay of popular consciousness. Crime Files is a groundbreaking series offering scholars, students and discerning readers a comprehensive set of guides to the world of crime and detective fiction. Every aspect of crime writing, detective fiction, gangster movie, true-crime exposé, police procedural and post-colonial investigation is explored through clear and informative texts offering comprehensive coverage and theoretical sophistication.

However, despite receiving some adverse criticism when they were first performed, Arlt’s plays proved a triumphant success, making an important contribution to the development of an Argentine national theatrical tradition. In the present article, we set out to establish not so much the intrinsic value of Arlt’s contribution to the stage, but the significance and cultural meaning of Saverio el cruel (1936) at the time it was written. In it, Arlt exploits the combination of different theatrical conventions. By subverting melodrama and borrowing from both the grotesco criollo and Pirandello’s metatheatre technique, he renders an original, privileged insight into Argentine culture. We argue that in this play Arlt demonstrates a high degree of social concern going beyond party political questions: he is the tireless opponent of poverty and social injustice – two major ...

Critics such as Lafforgue claim that no other genre has so strongly underpinned the system of Argentine literary fiction throughout the twentieth century (1997, 1). As early as the mid-1910s popular collections following the model of the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American dime novel began to flourish in Argentina. While periodicals such as La Novela Semanal, El Cuento Ilustrado and La Novela Universitaria started featuring detective tales at regular intervals (mainly modelled after juvenile publications in the style of US imports Nick Carter and Buffalo Bill), it was not until the mid-1940s that the genre was transformed in terms of popularity and, most importantly, prestige (Lafforgue and Rivera 1996, 17–19; Miranda 2013, 87–97). This chapter investigates the ways in which the Septimo Circulo collection, initially edited by Jorge Luis Borges and Adolfo Bioy Casares, radically altered the genre’s literary esteem.

(RT-PCR Cobas Amplicor Hepatitis C VirusTest V 2.0, Roche). Results: Out of 26,004 donors studied in the analysis period, 49 (0.19%) were reactive for HCV screening, 38 of whom attended the summons. Seventeen samples (44.5%) were repeatedly reactive to EIA HCVAg/Ac (the screening Rp 4.3 ± 1.2) with anti-HCV reactive. Six samples (16%) were non-reactive in the second sample (the screening Rp 1.1 ± 0.2). Fifteen samples (39.5%) repeatedly reactive to EIA values HCVAg/Ac (the screening Rp 1.8 ± 0.8) with anti HCV non-reactive, these samples were carried out RT- PCR to detect viral genetic material and all were negative as well as the detection of Ag by CMIA. Conclusions: (i) High values of Rp in the screening (Rp 4.3 ± 1.2), confirmed in the second sample holding similar values of Rp (Rp 4.1 ± 1.5). (ii) Low values of Rp in the screening (Rp 1.1 ± 0.2), become negative in the second sam...

Cognitive social capital is defined as the social support, trust, and cooperation that guide community behaviour. Structural social capital refers to an individual's participation in institutions and organizations. The association between social capital and test seeking was assessed. Materials and Methods-A survey of over 7500 donors in 3 Brazilian blood centres was conducted. Test seeking was classified into 4 non-overlapping categories (non-test seeker, possible, presumed, and self-disclosed test seekers) using 1 direct and 2 indirect questions. Social capital was summarized into cognitive and structural categorizations. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed. Results-Compared to non-test seekers (62% of survey respondents), cognitive social capital was higher for each category of test seeking (OR= 1.1, 7.4, 7.1, p<0.05 respectively). Male gender, lower education, and lower income were also significantly associated with test seeking. Conclusion: As test seekers appear to have strong social networks, blood banks may leverage this to convince them to seek testing at other locations.
