This paper aims to give a thorough explanation of this recent change in Albanian society since the 1990s by exploring the two-fold dimensions of the state-society relationship: on one hand, the role of the Albanian communist state and its formal civil society organizations in shaping a forced approach to volunteering before the 1990s, and on the other hand the effects of this phenomenon on Albanian attitudes to volunteering after the 1990s with the collapse of the regime. This two-sided analysis is enriched with discourse analysis of focus groups from two generations: the first born between 1950 and 1970, and the second born in the early 1990s

Fighting old and traditional mentality, the totalitarian socialist countries created the infrastructure for spreading the model of the “new man” according to new principles, aiming to make everyday life productive and disciplined. Under the implementation of the “new man” approach, especially the image of woman was reconstructed. The purpose of this paper is to analyze how the ideal of the “new man” and “new woman” were socially constructed and how they have influenced the everyday life of people, under the totalitarian socialist regime, referring to the case of the Albania. 18 in depth semi structured interviews with woman and men from 55 until 85 years old have been conducted and the poetry and text songs of th...

To explore how self-identity is reconstructed through deconstructing the image of “the other”, we chose to analyze the case of migrants, who are positioned as ‘the other’ and are treated as distant from the host societies. Albanians in Italy, especially those who have experienced the exodus of March and August of 1991, are at the center of the analysis, because they were the first ones in contact with the Italian society, after the collapse of the communist regime. The secondary data from the literature review and the qualitative primary data, generated from the biographical narration of eighteen people have been used to explore the phenomenon. In order to meet this research criteria, there are some questions to be answered which will help in solving the core issues of the problem. How the boats that arrived from Albanian coasts in Italy did create the image in the plural of settled peopl...

The study has been focused at Siena province in Italy and the case of the Albanian immigrants has been examined. 36 Albanian immigrants were invited to participate in the in-depth interviewing process. 21 others have participated at 4 focus groups. The findings revealed that the provincial characteristics influence the immigrants way of integration. The level of social "closeness" of a locality, determined by historical, geographical, demographical, social and cultural factors, create the climate that influences the integration process of immigrants at that locality.

immigrated to other countries with a new western unknown modern conceptualization which
was objective to them. During his stay in these countries the Albanian immigrant tried to
make this new world meaningful to him, through his contact with the local people. Due to
their inevitable interaction, an image of Albanian immigrant was constructed. This article
aims to analyze the social construction of Albanian immigrant self image in two main
destination countries: Greece and Italy. Our intention is to identify and understand at the
same time the way the Albanian immigrant perpetuates himself through his everyday
interaction and experience on Greek and Italian societies. Our main hypothesis was that the
immigrant self image is a production of the social status and is closely linked to the
immigrant’s myths constructed by different societies. Culture tales are still among us and
influence the creation of our social stereotypes and also the relationship between different
cultural groups. With other words we want to analyze the way the Albanian immigrant
develops his identity and his self image, reacting to the social stereotypes created by
immigrant myths in the host countries, comparing the case of the Albanian immigrant in
Greece with the one in Italy. We also scope to investigate if there is any connection between
these myths and the early Albanian myths in Balkan history. Our research is approached
through symbolic interactionist and phenomenological theories.
