This study aims at describing the civilizational dimension of Muhammadiyah's contribution which h... more This study aims at describing the civilizational dimension of Muhammadiyah's contribution which has not made an adequate attention. By the use of historical-philosophical approach and educational theories of social reconstruction, this paper, argues that the educational thought of Muhammadiyah is always influenced by the dynamic and religious development thought (ideology) emerging in Muhammadiyah. This paper is using a qualitative approach, where most of the data were collected through a library research mechanism. This study shows that first, Muhammadiyah education is a modern Islamic education which is based on the spirit of Islam Berkemajuan [Progressive Islam] aiming to reconstruct a timeworn public order to a new society. Therefore, Islam Berkemajuan is not only monolithic in its sociological reality but also expands its meaning to reconstruct the social economic, political and cultural development according to the age. Second, the Muhammadiyah's philosophy of education is based on two foundations, namely the theology of al-Ma'un and the theology of al-'Ashr which both of them are derived from the idea of KH. Ahmad Dahlan, the founder of Muhammadiyah. Both the theological bases become the anchor of the thinking and practice of the education of Muhammadiyah. Third, the purpose of education in Muhammadiyah is that to grow or develop the "Ma'rifat quotient" (the consciousness of divinity) which later becomes the cornerstone of the birth of the cosmopolitan and humanitarian ethos of Muhammadiyah. Both of the ethics manifest in the work of the Muhammadiyah social issues of civilization, health, economic, political, philanthropic, disaster relief, community empowerment and many others.

Based on the historical fact that KH. Ahmad Dahlan undertook the character education contained in Surah Al-'Ashr to his students for 7-9 months. This educational practice is manifested in the form of “Pengajian Wal-'Ashri” for young women and “Wal-'Ashri Cadre School” for male youth. This makes the spirit and ethos of al-'Ashr embedded in young men and women, thus creating a "theology of pious charity" ( amal shaleh ). Tesis ini meneliti tentang genealogi pemikiran pendidikan dalam sistem perkaderan Ikatan Pelajar ... more Tesis ini meneliti tentang genealogi pemikiran pendidikan dalam sistem perkaderan Ikatan Pelajar Muhammadiyah (IPM), yaitu salah satu organisasi perkaderan Muhammadiyah yang fokus di dunia pelajar dan pendidikan. Untuk mendidik para anggotanya, IPM memiliki pedoman pelatihan yang disebut dengan Sistem Perkaderan Ikatan (SPI). Melalui SPI, ideologi dan paradigma berpikir IPM ditanamkan kepada para anggotanya. Sejak kelahiran IPM (1961), SPI mengalami 4 (empat) kali rekonstruksi yaitu SPI Merah (1986), SPI Biru (1994), SPI Hijau (2002), dan SPI Kuning (2014). Menariknya rekonstruksi SPI selalu disertai dengan perubahan orientasi pendidikan. This study investigated the influence of Paulo Freire’s critical education and Moeslim Abdurrahma... more This study investigated the influence of Paulo Freire’s critical education and Moeslim Abdurrahman’s Transformative Islam in Ikatan Pelajar Muhammadiyah (IPM). The problem statement was formulated: to what extent Freire and Moeslim influence the educational thought and practice of education in IPM? By using discourse analysis, this study revealed that the discourse and practice of critical-transformative education has evolved in IPM since the reform era in 1998-2008. The Discourse of critical education and Transformative Islam are intertwined into “Manifesto of Transformative Critical Movement” incorporated in the educational guideline of IPM members. This transformative-critical discourse has encouraged IPM becoming a populist student organization. Afterward, the discourse and practice of this organization’s movements is accentuated by the criticism towards injustice and the struggle towards social transformation

Artikel ini akan mengulas paradigma dari praktik gerakan pemberdayaan masyarakat yang dilakukan o... more Artikel ini akan mengulas paradigma dari praktik gerakan pemberdayaan masyarakat yang dilakukan oleh Muhammadiyah. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan teori praktik sosial Pierre Bourdieu, studi kualitatif ini akan mengemukakan beberapa hal: pertama, apa yang mendorong lahirnya gerakan pemberdayaan masyarakat dalam Muhammadiyah. Kedua, bagaimana model praksis pemberdayaan masyarakat ini dilakukan Muhammadiyah. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa praksis pemberdayaan masyarakat Muhammadiyah didorong oleh teologi Alma’un (ajaran) pendiri gerakan ini yaitu KH. Ahmad Dahlan, yang direinterpretasi oleh Moeslim Abdurrahman menjadi “Islam Transformatif” sebagai paradigm Islam yang memihak kepada kaum lemah. Teologi sosial ini kemudian melahirkan praksisme sosial yang dilakukan oleh Majelis Pemberdayaan Masyarakat (MPM) untuk menggempur kemiskinan gaya baru di abad ke-21.

Tulisan ini mengamati transformasi dan pergeseran orientasi paradigma pendidikan kader Pondok Shabran pasca kepemimpinan Djazman al-Kindi, hubungan elit (kekuasaan) dalam pembentukan pandangan paradigma pendidikan, dan kontinuitas dan diskontinuitasnya. Landasan teori tulisan ini adalah teori diaspora, kontinuitas, serta diskontinuitas. Melalui Pondok Shabran, kader-kader Persyarikatan mampu melakukan diaspora peradaban dalam rangka membenihkan perubahan sosial.

Through practical Social Theory by Pierre Bourdieu, this study finds some points: first, the reasons of Muhammadiyah's community development programs. Second, the models of Muhammadiyah's community development programs. It finds that the programs are conducted due to al-Ma'un theological perspective coined KH. Ahmad Dahlan which is described by Moeslim Abdurrahman as "Transformative Islam" that fights for the weak people. This social theology then leads to social conducted by Majelis Pemberdayaan Masyarakat (MPM)/Community Development Assembly to combat poverty in the 21 st century. Beyond a century, Muhammadiyah, one of the largest socio-religious movements in Indonesia, remain... more Beyond a century, Muhammadiyah, one of the largest socio-religious movements in Indonesia, remains continuously to uphold the ideals of establishing "the truly Islamic society". What is the Muhammadiyah spirit in facing the challenges of the times and spaces? Using library approach, this study argues that the Muhammadiyah always dedicated to and take inspiration from the three ethoses of the Quran in achieving the goal of building a truly Islamic society, those are the ethos of rahmah, al-Ma'un and al-‘Ashr that founded on integrative approach between the Quranic interpretation, the sacred heart-mind and the science-technology, and the universal human experience. Rahmah (compassion) is a key of developing the sacred heart-mind capabilities of how to save the lives of people in the world. Muhammadiyah, which is identical with the ethos of al-Ma`un (social praxis), tends to throwaway religious formalities for it has been included in the social orientation to advocate dhu‘afa and mustadh‘afin. Al-‘Ashr ethos defines religion (iman) and civilization (`amal shalih) two separated entities but in the state of collaboration. Through this way, Muhammadiyah is no longer exaggeratedly concerned with the issue of poverty and impoverishment, but also regarded to the effective systems, institutions, and leadership in building the perfect civilization.

While existing construction of the philosophy of Islamic education is still heavily influenced by the Western philosophy, the current study investigates philosophical views of Islamic education from several philosophers in classical Islam. This research focuses on the question of human essence to discover the nature and purpose of Islamic education. The investigation of educational ideas is conducted on the branches of classical Islamic philosophy namely, Peripatetic philosophy (Ibn Sina), Herme- neutic-Pythagorean philosophy (Ikhwan al-Shafa), Illumination philosophy (Suhrawardi), Theosophy-Transcendent philosophy (Mulla Sadra). Using the literature research method, qualitative research approach and philosophical analysis. Interaction between religion and science can be seen through several perspectives that include Islamization of science, Islamic scientification, Integration of interconnection (paradigm of Indonesian science). While science-based Al-Qur'an can be divided into three, namely Modern Science, Islamic Science and the logic of the universal verses. This study also found that Islamic Science can be built from the Qur'an as the basis of scientific epistemology. Revelation as a source that provides inspiration for the construction of science. This new Ijtihad is a project of civilization and progress of Islam, because it awakens to Muslims about the importance of kauniyah verses that have been forgotten. The logic of the universal verses proposes an " Islamic Science " approach which science is constructed based on the inspiration of God's revelation as a source of inspiration for the building of science. Islamic science not only combines or matches Science and Revelation, but with its interaction with philosophy. This is where it is hoped that science that comes from the revelation of the Qur'an will continue to grow, but not separated from religious values. Nasr's paradigm is based on the universality and absolute dimension of Islam. Nasr utilizes Islamic intellectual tradition such as kalam, philosophy and mysticism as a tool to explain Islamic teachings. As a disciple of Shuhrawardi's philosophy of illumination, Nasr proposes a concept called scientia sacra as an authentic knowledge because it is derived from the Quran and human intellect. Scientia sacra appears in the form of "al-'ilm al-hudluri". As regard crises faced by modern human beings, the forgotten tradition derived from Islamic sufism should be included in the current Islamic education model as an answer to the thirst for spirituality among modern humankinds.

Penelitian ini ingin menunjukan sikap Muhammadiyah terhadap perubahan masyarakat yang begitu cepat, yaitu masyarakat industri menuju post-industri. Dalam melakukan dakwah kelas menengah, dengan pendekatan yang tepat, akan melahirkan energi dakwah yang luar biasa. Dalam hal ini, Muhammadiyah GKB mampu malakukan pendekatan yang efektif. Kelas menengah yang memiliki materi yang berlebih, dan membutuhkan spiritualitas. Melalui, spiritualitas inilah Muhammadiyah GKB mampu mengambil peluang untuk melakukan dakwah. Dakwah yang dilakukan Muhammadiyah ternyata selalu diawali dengan gerakan pencerahan (hati dan fikr) melalui pengajian. Kemudian ditransformasikan menjadi gerakan amal yang mampu melahirkan kebudayaan.

Di usianya yang sudah 52 tahun sejak kelahiran 18 Juli 1961, bukanlah waktu yang cukup untuk menunjukkan sebuah eksistensi yang established. Namun juga, bukan waktu yang singkat untuk mengukir sejarah pergerakan yang dinamis mengikuti arus besar perubahan yang memang cepat dan serba uncertainty ini. Lantas di usia sedemikian itu, apa yang sudah diperbuat IPM? Apa pula yang hendak dilakukan (what next)? Tentu jawabannya dikembalikan kepada pasukan inti IPM. Lantas, siapa stake holder itu? Jawabannya adalah kita semua, yang senantiasa harus bercermin dari realitas yang ada, untuk meyakini bahwa diri kita bukan entitas yang paling eksistensial, bahkan mungkin kalau mau jujur kita mungkin masih tertinggal dari yang lain.
