Nanocomposites are new materials made with fillers which have nanosize. These materials have a big potential for applications in the automotive and aerospace industry as well as in construction, electrical applications and food packing. There is a tremendous interest for using bionanoparticles like cellulose microfibrils or whiskers to be applied in the new era of biocomposites.

These frames are suitable for installing in any region of Chile, innovating on construction element profile designs and the material's virtues. The raw materials used for this research were homopolymer polypropylene (40%) and radiata pine wood dust (60%). The profiles were manufactured with a TC 35 Milacron twin screw extruder; additives, including pigments and filters to avoid surface fading caused by UV radiation and environmental effects, were added to the mixture. Natural weathering (3 months) and UV exposure cycle (200h/60ºC) tests were used to evaluate the material. Doors and windows were selected for their high hygrothermic performance. The door frame performance was evaluated by testing for shape and dimension, transverse stiffness, straightness, flatness, squareness, impact, humidity content, and glued joint behavior. The windows were tested for air and water tightness, wind res...

Adhesives were prepared, characterized and evaluated by FT-IR and DMA. The shear strength of adhesive bonds, including dry and wet strength, was also evaluated. FT-IR spectra of adhesives with reinforcing agents have functional groups which increase the reactivity of the adhesives. DMA results showed that adhesive with reinforcing agents had good performance, comparable to UF. The shear strength of the adhesive under humid and dry conditions increased and was satisfactory. Results indicated that yeast protein extracts of Rhodotorula rubra reinforced with resorcinol and glyoxal may be used in the wood adhesives industry.

Specimen having 60% and 80% particle and fibre of radiata pine (Pinus radiata) were mixed with polypropylene (plastic) and four different additives, namely Struktol TR 016 which is coupling agent, CIBA antimicrobial agent (IRGAGUARD F3510) as fungicide, CIBA UV filter coating (TINUVIN 123S), CIBA blue pigment (IRGALITE), and their combinations. Based on the initial finding of this work static bending properties of the samples enhanced as above chemicals were added into both particle and fibre-based specimens. Thickness swelling of the samples were also improved with having additives in the panels. Micrographs taken on scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed that coupling agent and pigment resulted in more homogeneous mixture of wood and plastic together. Two surface roughness parameters average roughness (Ra) and maximum roughness (Rmax) used to evaluate surface characteristics of the samples showed that particle based samples had rougher surface characteristics than those of fibre based ones. No significant influence of chemicals added in the samples was found on surface roughness values of the samples manufactured from particle and fibre of radiata pine.

In Australia, the macadamia nut industries generate as much as 28,000 tonnes of empty shells on an annual basis. These by products are under-utilized, often used for garden mulching or ground and used for animal filler, or else incinerated, as their disposal in landfill is cost-prohibitive, through sheer volume.

The present study considers and explores the suitability of these materials for high-moisture environment furniture panel applications. Results are presented for the relevant physical and mechanical properties and are compared with a conventional ...

The criterion used to evaluate the models is the uncorrected sum of squares of differences between the predicted equilibrium moisture content and experimental values published in literature for temperatures between 0ºC and 160ºC. The results show that the Malmquist model gave the best overall fit to experimental data for the relative humidities considered (40%, 52%, 65%, 75% and 85%). However, the García model performs better for temperatures between 110ºC and 155ºC at a relative humidity of 85%. Therefore, the choice of the sorption model depends on the specific hygrothermal conditions required by the user.

They focus on the academic, psychosocial and motivational weaknesses of students showing how these can be overcome with strategic projects to aid students in their first year of higher education. The case study, a multi-million US dollar project at a regional, state-owned university, the University of Bio-Bio, occurred over a three-year span – 2007-10. The various initiatives created under the auspices of the project take into account the reality that 78.9% of the students are from the lower socio-economic quintiles of the population and have gaps in their linguistic and scientific knowledge, and lack the skills, learning attitudes, learning strategies and motivation necessary for success. By means of descriptive analysis and gap analysis, it is shown that the implementation of additional academic, psychosocial and motivational support initiatives reduce student dropout rates to...

Gel times at 100 • C of 45% water solutions of commercial pine tannin extract (Pinus radiata ex Diteco Ltda, Chile) with respectively 8% paraformaldehyde and 9% glyoxal were done at different pHs. Duplicate one layer laboratory particleboards were prepared by adding 12% total resin solids of adhesives composed of commercial pine tannin extract (Pinus radiata ex Diteco Ltda, Chile) with paraformaldehyde, or glyoxal or polymeric 4,4' diphenylmethanne diisocianate (pMDI), respectively. It was found that tannin-glyoxal panels which do not contain formaldehyde and with an emission equal to that of unbounded wood can be obtained by the use of glyoxal as hardener.
