Since ancient times, these gifts of nature allowed human beings to expand their activities and develop from being primitive hunter-gatherers to pastoral nomads and then to settled agriculturists. However, the seers and thinkers of the ancient times understood the fact that while gifts of nature could be found and used aplenty, attempts to exploit nature beyond the boundaries of stability would lead to the nature's wrath. Thus, the idea of utilizing nature with due consideration to maintaining its integrity, along with other inhabitants of the environment, was the ancient Indian perception of sustainable living which was rooted in environmental consciousness.

The spread of the gunpowder and different firearms to India has been disputed in terms of the time of introduction, process of evolution and the actual efficacy of these instruments as deciding the results of warfare. The cannon has been traditionally seen as a siege instrument while the musket is made out to be an instrument of State centralisation in the Mughal Empire. However, two major debates have sprung up in the scholarly world-whether the bow and arrow were more impactful than the musket in warfare and whether the Gunpowder Empire Theory can be applied in the context of the Mughal State. This paper proposes the need to pick up fresh variables for analysis so as to overcome the stalemate of the debates and properly comprehend the role of gunpowder weapons in early Mughal State building and military successes.

Yet, the peculiarity of such an encroachment into the natural life of our surroundings has been an uneasy manifestation of distortions in human priorities and the layering of profit on sensibility to long term impact. While the Brundtland Commission (1987) has marked down the proposed direction of human society, exuding optimistic tones with the adoption of 'sustainable development' as the most important foreign policy of recent times (Basiago, 1995), the weak exposition of human necessities still lingers in the sense that the environment is being sustained to sustain us, which inevitably ends up in exploitation, given the natural human proneness to favour profits over positives. While the environmental sustenance has largely turned out to be checked exploitation of the environment, the mindset from the beginning being 'to exploit' has left us stranded at the impasse with the question-How can we survive without using resources available from nature? The very fact that the present is congested with wide-ranging problems of human existence is reflected in the difference in attitude towards the environment in the present and that in the earlier times, when humanity was still trying to understand how nature functions to give us our living essentials. Human reaction to environment was quite different from what it is now and the main reason can be pointed out as the idea of 'control'. From the inception of humankind on earth to the present times when man is guilty of pushing the earth

Mankind has realised, through a keen observation of their surroundings that nature can be as unforgiving as it can be nourishing. Being conscious of the basic principles which define the environment, human beings maintained that destruction of Mother Nature would result in their own abolition (Sengupta, 2015). That is why, human beings, in the ancient times, believed in conserving the sensitive yet beneficial ties they reserved with the environment.
