Syntactic strategies such äs the use of honorifics, causatives, intransitive verbs, and embedding... more Syntactic strategies such äs the use of honorifics, causatives, intransitive verbs, and embedding, and the use of the past tense, elliptical constructions, and passives to achieve politeness effects are discussed in this paper;. The three Indo-Aryan languages chosen are Hindi (H), Bengali (B), and Punjabi (P), and the two Dravidian languages are Telugu (T) and Malayalam (M). are chosen on the basis of our experience äs members of Speech communities using these languages. All three authors are fluent Speakers of Hindi and regularly interact with the Hindi speech Community. The first author is a native Speaker of Telugu, the second of Punjabi, and the third of Bengali. Thus, except for Malayalam, we have a fairly good idea of the syntactic strategies used for politeness effects.

According to the 1991 census, the total population of India (including the projected population o... more According to the 1991 census, the total population of India (including the projected population of Jammu and Kashmir, where the census could not be held) is 845.30 million. In order to calculate literacy rates, only those aged seven years and over were taken into account, yielding a total of 359.28 million literates, i.e. approximately 52 per cent of the total population in that age group. The literacy rate among females was 39.29 per cent, as against the male literacy rate of 64.13 per cent; again, the rural literacy rate was 44.69 per cent, as against the urban literacy rate of 73.08 per cent. The drop-out rate from class I to V in primary school was estimated at approximately 50 per cent. (For all the above details, see National Institute of Adult Education, 1993).
