Computational experiments based on solving fundamental physics equations bring authentic science ... more Computational experiments based on solving fundamental physics equations bring authentic science to the classroom. C omputational physics, which provides digital representations of natural phenomena by solving their governing equations numerically, has transformed areas as diverse as scientifi c research, engineering design (1), and fi lm production (2). It is also changing the way science is taught. The Molecular Workbench (MW) software, http://mw.concord.org, developed by the Concord Consortium, illustrates this perspective. MW models atomicscale phenomena on the basis of molecular dynamics and quantum mechanics calculations, which enables students to carry out computational experiments to investigate and learn a wide range of science concepts.

The paper will describe a large scale design study involving a total of 1100 middle and high scho... more The paper will describe a large scale design study involving a total of 1100 middle and high school students from California and Massachusetts who collaborated on-line about plate tectonic activity in their respective location. The students, drawn from demographically diverse schools, collaborated online using WISE (Web-based Science Environment, Linn & Hsi, 2000). WISE is an integrated set of software resources to engage students in many types of scientific inquiry, including prompted reflection, electronic discussions, evidence sorting and argument mapping, collaborative search for evidence, collaborative design, and analysis .

The studies reported in this paper are an initial effort to explore the applicability of computat... more The studies reported in this paper are an initial effort to explore the applicability of computational models in introductory science learning. Two instructional interventions are described that use a molecular dynamics model embedded in a set of online learning activities with middle and high school students in ten classrooms. The studies indicate that middle and high schools students can acquire robust mental models of the states of matter through guided explorations of computational models of matter based on molecular dynamics. Using this approach, students accurately recall arrangements of the different states of matter, and can reason about atomic interactions. These results are independent of gender and they hold for a number of different classroom contexts. Follow-up interviews indicate that students are able to transfer their understanding of phases of matter to new contexts.
